Late Inning Surge Pushes Baseball Past Le Moyne

Canisius rattled off 11 unanswered runs over its final four innings to erase a three-run deficit and defeat Le Moyne, 17-9, in non-conference collegiate baseball action Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins claimed the win in their 2025 home debut, improving to 4-15 on the season. Le Moyne fell to 5-15 on their campaign with their third loss in their past five games.

Five Canisius batters tallied multi-hit games, led by senior Trent Rumley, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two doubles. Sophomore JC Spinosa and junior Mason Cisco also totaled four RBI, with Cisco legging out a double and his first collegiate home run that tied the game in the sixth inning. Junior Owen Silliman scored four runs in the lead off spot for Canisius, adding two hits, two walks, two stolen bases and three RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Joe LoPinto was credited with the win, holding the Dolphins scoreless in the seventh inning with one strikeout. Freshman Weston Elkovitch, sophomore Austin Kutz, junior Sam Staerker and redshirt senior Ethan Hennessy all pitched scoreless innings to hold the Dolphins at bay and secure the win.

Le Moyne struck in the opening frame as Ethan Farina led the game off with a triple and scored shortly after on sacrifice fly. The Griffs tied the game in the home half of the first when redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford doubled to drive home Silliman.

The Dolphins retook the lead the next inning, putting up three runs with RBI singles from Farina, Tyler Campbell and Tim Denet. Canisius scored two runs in the bottom of the second, with Spinosa hitting a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 5-3 game.

The Griffs took a brief lead in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a double by junior Andrew Marcello and adding another with an RBI single from Silliman to grab a 6-5 advantage. Le Moyne answered back in the fourth, tying the game with a RBI single from Wyatt Patchett before retaking the lead with a three-run homer off the bat of Jack Cannon.

Canisius pitching settled in from there, holding the Dolphins scoreless for the remainder of the game. Cisco tied the game at 9-9 in the sixth with a three-run home run over the center field fence in the sixth inning.

The Griffs pulled in front during the following inning, plating five runs in the seventh to take a 14-9 lead. Spinosa notched the first run of the frame on a bases-loaded walk before Rumley cleared the bases with a double and Cisco added to his RBI count with a double to finish off the frame. Canisius added insurance in the eighth as Spinosa, Silliman and Rumley again produced RBI hits that brought the final score to 17-9.
