Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Saint Peter’s

The Canisius baseball team dropped both games of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Peter's Saturday at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

Game one saw sophomore Eric Weeks go 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI while redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki tallied two RBI and double, but the host Peacocks pulled out a 9-8 victory as they took advantage of two Canisius errors in the bottom of the eighth.

In the nightcap, the Saint Peter's bats were able to overpower a Canisius team that posted four home runs, two of which came off the bat of junior Tommy Sheridan, recording a 14-11 victory.

The Peacocks improved to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in MAAC play after the doubleheader sweep. With the setback, the Griffs fell to 2-15 and 1-4 in league action.

GAME ONE RECAP
Tied at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Saint Peter's took advantage of a pair of Canisius errors to push Ashby Vining across the plate after he reached on a fielder's choice to grab a 9-8 lead.

The Griffs were able to get the leadoff batter into scoring position with one out, but Saint Peter's reliever Mike DeForte retired the final two Canisius batters to preserve the one-run victory.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius trailed 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning before plating four runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Weeks, to grab a 6-5 advantage.

The Peackocks quickly regained the lead in the home half of the fifth as a two-run double off the bat of Garrett Greco and a run-scoring single from Tommy Kendrick put the home team back in front, 8-6.

The Griffs once again battled back, tallying single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to knot the score at 8-8, setting the stage for the Peacocks go-ahead run in the home half of the eighth.

Redshirt senior Ethan Hennessy was charged with the loss for Canisius, despite three innings of work that saw him allow only one hit.

GAME TWO RECAP
The nightcap proved to be a slug fest as the teams combined for 35 hits, six home runs, and 25 RBI. Canisius landed the first blows in the opening inning as freshman Brayden Hy and senior Trent Rumley both hit solo home runs. The Peacocks returned the favor in the bottom of the second by scoring three runs, punctuated by a John Wade home run, to grab a 3-2 lead.

The Griffs tacked on three more runs in the third as junior Mason Cisco, Sheridan and Weeks all posted RBI hits to give the Griffs a 5-3 edge.

Saint Peter got all three runs back in the home half of the third before adding a run in the fourth and a pair of tallies in the fifth to build their cushion 9-5.

Spinosa tallied an RBI single in the sixth to cut the Canisius deficit to three, but Saint Peter's continued to batter Canisius pitching, growing its lead to 11-6 after six innings. Sheridan tied to lead a Canisius comeback in the late innings, hitting two multi-RBI home runs, a three-run shot in the seventh and a two-run home in the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome the hitting of Saint Peter's.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius took its first losses to Saint Peter's since the 2015 season, snapping an 18-game winning streak versus the Peacocks. Saint Peter's had not beaten Canisius in back-to-back games since March 23, 2013 in a Saturday doubleheader.
• The Griffs have hit a home run in seven straight games. They have hit multiple home runs in four games this season.
• In game two, Canisius pitching allowed a run in every single inning for the first time this season.
• In game one, all nine starting batters reached base at least one time.
• Weeks' home run in the first game was the first of his career, and his three RBI were a career high.
• Sheridan hit two home runs in a game for the second time in his career, last achieving this on March 30 2024 against Manhattan.
• Sheridan's six RBI is the most by a Griff since Jackson Strong and Dylan Vincent both posted six-RBI performances in the 2023 season.
• In the second game, junior Felix Morin reached the 100-strikeout plateau for his career after striking out four batters.
