Baseball Shut Down by NC State Pitching

NC State's Ryan Marohn held the Canisius bats in check with a complete-game performance, totaling 11 strikeouts and allowing no runs, as the Wolfpack defeated the Golden Griffins 10-0 in seven innings Sunday afternoon in non-conference collegiate baseball action at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C.

The Wolfpack complete the sweep of  Canisius with the win and move to 7-5 on the season. The Griffs fell to 0-6 on the season.

Marohn is credited with the win after striking out a career-high 11 batters, while only giving up five hits. He did not allow an extra-base hit or a walk in the gme, and the NC State defense committed no errors. Canisius senior Aaron Duffy took the loss on the hill afterhe allowed three runs on one hit with five walks in 1.1 innings of work.

Senior Trent Rumley led the Blue and Gold at the playe by going 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Sophomores JC Spinosa and Eric Weeks, along with redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford, all recorded base hits for the Griffs. Despite the loss, the Griffs pitching staff totaled their highest strikeout count of the season, with junior Sam Staerker and Duffy punching out three batters each.

NC State took control of the game from the first at-bat with Justin DeCriscio sending the second pitch of the game over the left-field fence, giving the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, NC State loaded the bases before an error by the Griffs' infield and a walk by Duffy brought two more runs home.

In the top of the fourth inning, Canisius had their best scoring chance of the afternoon after Glassford led off the inning with a single and was moved over to second base  thanks to a bunt by Spinosa. Rumley singled to move Glassford to third, and then he promptly stole second, putting two Canisius runners in scoring position. However, Marohn struck out the next Canisius batter and then induced a popup to end the frame and the Griffs' threat to get on the scoreboard.

The NC State bats came alive in the fifth inning as Alex Sosa, Josh Hogue and Ryan Jaros all tallied RBI hits, making the score at 8-0 in favor of the Wolfpack. NC State closed out the game in the fifth and sixth innings after Sosa and Decriscio each drove in their second RBI of the day, respectively. Marohn closed out the run-rule shortened game in the top-half of the seventh by retiring three of the four Canisius batters he faced in the inning.
