Hockey Grounded by Air Force in Overtime

Clayton Cosentino scored 1:16 into overtime to lift Air Force to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Cosentino finished with a goal and an assist as he capped a rally that saw the Falcons (13-18-1, 10-12-0 AHA) battle back from a 2-0 deficit midway through the third period to earn the victory. Nolan Cunningham and Chris Hedden accounted for the other two Air Force goals while Guy Blessing finished with 21 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Sophomore Matteo Giampa and freshman Luke Farthing notched the two goals for the Golden Griffins (9-18-2, 9-10-2 AHA). Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer got the start in goal for Canisius, finishing the game with a career-high 49 saves.

Trailing 2-0 with just under nine minutes to play in regulation, Cunningham got the Falcons on the board at the 11:57 mark when his rebound attempt deflected off a Canisius defender and into the goal to make it a one-goal game.

Hedden brought Air Force level with 1:17 to play in the third, one-timing a cross-ice feed from Cosentino between the legs of Wickström Stumer from the top of the right face-off circle to send the game to overtime.

Cosentino put the game away early in the extra session, intercepting a Canisius pass in the neutral zone to spring himself on a breakaway before putting the puck past the glove of Wickström Stumer to cap the comeback and secure the victory.

After two periods of scoreless hockey, Canisius broke the deadlock less than two minutes into the third as Giampa finished off a 2-on-1 break with fellow sophomore Trey Funk for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Marshall doubled the Griffs advantage to 2-0 with 11:08 elapsed in the third when his shot from the point found its way through traffic and past the blocker of Blessing, setting the stage for the Falcons comeback. POSTGAME COMMENTS GAME NOTES
