Baseball Falls in Series Finale to James Madison

The first four batters of the Canisius lineup all tallied multiple hits but could not overcome multiple fielding mistakes in a 5-2 setback to James Madison Sunday in collegiate baseball action at Veteran Memorial Field in Harrisonburg, Va.

With the win, the Dukes moved to 4-3 on the season as they completed the series sweep, sending the Golden Griffins to an 0-3 start in their first week of action.

RHP Todd Mozoki is credited with the win as he allowed two earned runs, five hits while fanning five batters in 5.0 innings of the work. Senior Aaron Duffy started his season with a loss after 4.0 innings of work, allowing two hits, two earned runs and two walks.

Canisius had its best offensive performance of the series, with freshman Bennett Cox having another solid performance in the lead off spot. The rookie went 2-for-5 with a double and scored both of the runs for the Griffs. Sophomore JC Spinosa went 2-for-4 with an RBI double while senior Trent Rumley continued his hot start to the season with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by an RBI single in the third inning.

The Blue and Gold got off to a hot start as Cox opened the contest with a double into center field and was moved to third by redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford grounding out to the shortstop. He was driven in by a Spinosa single to take a 1-0 lead in the contest.

James Madison responded in the home half of the first, capitalizing on a throwing error that advanced Ike Schmidly to third on a stolen base. He was later driven in by first baseman Coleman Calabrese on a ground out to third base, tying the game at 1-1.

Canisius took the lead again the top of the third as Cox got on base with a single and was driven around the bags with bunt from Glassford and pop out from Spinosa. Rumley got Cox home with an RBI single, putting the Griffs up 2-1.

In the fourth inning, the Dukes put two runs on the board as Corey Dowdell's sacrifice fly scored Calabrese and Jack Guerrero crossed the plate on a ground out to second base. James Madison added insurance runs in the fifth inning as Ryan Dooley tripled and then scored on a sac fly. Dooley drove in a run in the seventh, sending a double off the fence that drove in Reece Moody, putting the final score at 5-2.

POST GAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK
"We showed growth offensively over the three days and we need to continue to build an edge. When we made mistakes they took advantage of them. We need to be able to clean some things up this week to be ready for another good opponent next weekend. The group showed more good results this weekend than the box scores will show and we will continue to build where needed to and get better for this weekend."
