Women’s Basketball Drops Home Contest to Siena

The Siena Saints shot 46.8 percent from the floor and outscored Canisius in the paint 50-18 to record a 72-58 win over the Golden Griffins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Siena improved to 16-10 overall and 13-4 in MAAC play with the victory, increasing its winning streak to six games. The Griffs slipped to 7-19 overall and 6-10 in league games. 

Canisius graduate student guard Jaela Johnson led Canisius with her team-high 18 points while dishing out a team-high three assists and shooting 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Shariah Gailes scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season, and third in-a-row.

For Siena, guard Ahniysha Jackson led three Saints players in double-figures in the scoring column with his game-high 23 points. Aniya Hooker chipped in 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Teresa Seppala added 10 points to Siena's winning cause. The Saints closed out the contest shooting 30.0 percent (3-for-10) from 3-point land and 73.3 percent (11-for-15) from the free-throw line.

The Canisius offense started strong in the first quarter, fighting back from an early three-point deficit to finish the quarter with a 15-14 lead. Sophomore Mary Copple continued to excel as a starter, opening the quarter with five points and two assists to give the Griffs a lead after the contest's opening 10 minutes.

Midway through the second quarter, Jackson scored on back-to-back possessions for the Saints to cap a 10-4 run which gave the Saints a 24-19 lead with 5:58 left in the opening half. A 3-pointer by freshman Irene Rey Pineda cut the Siena's margin to 28-25 with 3:53 left before the halftime break, but Siena took a 28-25 lead into the locker room at intermission after it made four free-throws in the final minute of the opening stanza.

In the third quarter, Siena scored the first six points out of the break, highlighted by a four-point play from Seppala that gave the visiting team a nine-point lead at 34-25. Six-straight points by Canisius got the Griffs within three at 34-31, however, Siena pulled away for good thanks to its own 6-0 moments later, with Jackson and Hooker combining to score all six points for Siena. In the fourth quarter, Siena shot 57.1 percent from the field, while holding Canisius to a a 5-for-18 clip in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's contest marked the 84th meeting between Siena and Canisius. Siena holds a 59-28 edge in the all-time series.
• Canisius was out-rebounded by the Saints, 38-34. The Griffs had out-rebounded their last seven opponents.
• The Griffs shot a season-high 31 free-throw attempts, but hit on just 54.8 percent of those tries from the line.
• With 18 points, Johnson achieved 17 double-figure scoring games on the season, a career-high.
• Johnson has scored 10-or-more points in 12 of her last 14 games.
• Gailes notched her third straight double-double, the first player to achieve this since 2023 when Sisi Eleko opened the season with four-straight double-double performances.

UP NEXT
Canisius will close out the road portion of the 2024-25 regular season next week with a road trip to Manhattan and Iona. The Griffs will play at Manhattan on Feb. 27, with tip-off in Riverdale, N.Y., set for 7 p.m.
