Hot Shooting Propels Manhattan Past Women’s Basketball

Tegan Young scored a game-high 17 points to lead Manhattan to a 71-35 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at the Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.

The Jaspers improved to 7-10 in MAAC play and 13-13 overall while the Golden Griffins fell to 6-11 in league action and 7-20 on the season.

Young was one of three Manhattan players to reach double figures as Nitzan Amar scored 16 points and Kristina Juric chipped in 12 off the bench. Overall, nine players recorded at least a point and grabbed a rebound for Manhattan in the victory as the host Jaspers shot 53.2 percent from the floor in the final three quarters of the game. The Jaspers also committed a season-low nine turnovers, giving them a 20-3 advantage on points off turnovers.

Freshman Yasmine Djibril and junior Mariam Sanogo led Canisius with eight points each. Sophomore Shariah Gailes paced the Griffs on the glass, grabbing six boards and scoring six points. Overall, Canisius shot just 32.6 from the field, went 1-for-20 from three-point land and was just 4-for-12 from the free-throw line.

The Jaspers led the contest wire-to-wire, outscoring the Griffs in the second quarter by 23-7 margin to take a 38-19 lead into the halftime break. 

Manhattan maintained control of the game in the second half as it grew its lead to as many as 37 in the final minutes before settling on a 36-point margin of victory. 

GAME NOTES
• Thursday's contest marked the 74th meeting between Manhattan and Canisius. With the win, the Jaspers lead the all-time series 38-36.
• The Griffs scored a season-low 35 points in the loss, while also shooting a season-low 5.0 percent from three-point land.
• The Griffs were out-rebounded by a 38-27 margin in the contest, the first time since Dec. 19 2024 at Merrimack when they were out-rebounded by a margin of 10 or more.
• Gailes has matched or exceeded her scoring output with rebounding for the 16th time this season with her six points and six rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Griffs conclude their road schedule on Saturday when they take on the Iona Gaels in New Rochelle, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
