Baseball Stumped at James Madison

The James Madison pitching staff held the Canisius bats in check, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out 12 as the host Dukes defeated the Golden Griffins 6-1 in non-conference collegiate baseball action Saturday at Veterans Memorial Field in Harrisonburg, Va.

James Madison improved to 3-3 on the year as the Dukes took the second game in the three-game weekend series, while the Griffs fell to 0-2 with the loss. James Madison starter Jaden Kinsler earned the win on the hill for the Dukes after he allowed one run on two hits and fanned eight, while Canisius junior Felix Morin took the loss in his first start of the season after he gave up three runs on six hits to go with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

James Madison scored a run in the home-half of the first and then scored again in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0. In the top of the fourth, Canisius cut the James Madison lead in half to 2-1 after sophomore JC Spinosa led off the inning with a triple to the gap in left-center. Spinosa would score a short-time later after senior Trent Rumley drove in his third RBI of the season with a ground out to second base. The only other sources of offense for the Blue and Gold came off the bat of redshirt-senior Josh Niles, who had a base hit in the second inning, and a walk and stolen base by junior Andrew Marcello in the Griffs' half of the fifth.

A solo homer by James Madison's Ike Schmidly with two outs in the fifth made the score 3-1 in favor of the home team, and then the Dukes tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. That was more than enough offensive support for the JMU bullpen, which retired the final 12 Canisius batters to appear at the plate.

GAME NOTES:
• James Madison is 10-0 all-time against Canisius.
• Freshman Weston Elkovitch made his collegiate debut with a relief appearance on the mound in the seventh inning. He recorded the first strikeout of his career in 0.2 innings of work.
• Rumley has driven in all three of the runs this season for the Griffs after two RBI in Friday's game.
• Spinosa's triple marked the second of his career.
• Niles has reached base safely in three of the team's last four games, dating back to the end of last season.
