Baseball Falls in Season Opener to James Madison

Freshman Bennett Cox opened up his collegiate career with a 3-for-4 performance highlighted by two doubles and two stolen bases but Canisius could not overcome James Madison's pitching as it suffered a 5-2 setback Friday in non-conference collegiate baseball action at Veterans Memorial Field in Harrisonburg, Va.

With the win, the Dukes improve to 2-3 in their non-conference slate while the Golden Griffins start the season 0-1. James Madison's RHP Jackson Logar was credited with the win while Max Khule picked up the save. Senior RHP Peyton Consigli took the loss after 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts, four walks and three earned runs.

"We have some things we need to clean up and improve upon," Canisius head coach Matt Mazurek said. "Bennett Cox started his career off really well and we had some good outings on the mound today.  Joe Abramson coming back and getting to see all the hard work come to fruition was great to see. Overall, tomorrow we need to come out a little bit more ready to go."

Canisius threatened in the first inning as Cox led the game with a double down the left field line. The rookie made it to third on a stolen base before Logar retired the side to escape the jam.

The Griffs took the lead in the top of the third inning as junior Owen Silliman took a lead off walk and stole second. Cox batted him to third with a single to center before stealing second himself. With two runners in scoring position, the cleanup hitter, senior Trent Rumley, socked a double into the left center gap to put the Griffs up 2-0.

This proved to be all the offensive the Griffs could muster as the Dukes pitching staff retired the next 13 batters. Cox posted his second double of the game for the lone base runner for the Griffs in the final six innings.

James Madison tied the game in the fourth as Coleman Calabrese scored on a dropped third strike, and took the lead in the fourth with an RBI single from Reese Moody. The Dukes extended their lead out three runs in the sixth as Jack Canizzaro and Ryan Dooley each tallied an RBI.
