Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Mount St. Mary’s Over Women’s Basketball

Forward Jo Raflo exploded for 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 72-59 victory over Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Mountaineers improved to 10-4 in MAAC play and 12-11 overall with the win while the Golden Griffins fell to 6-8 in league action with a 7-17 record on the season.

Raflo's fourth-quarter explosion capped off a 28-point performance on 11-for-18 shooting, allowing the Mountaineers to break a 51-51 tie with 7:47 remaining in regulation. Two other Mount St. Mary's players reached double figures, with Madison Ruff tallying 12 points and Nyodie Guerard scoring 11. Overall, Mount St. Mary's shot 44.3 percent from the field, 42.6 percent from beyond the arc (6-for-14) and made 12-of-15 tries from the charity stripe.

Despite the loss, multiple Canisius players stuffed the stat sheet, with graduate student Jaela Johnson going for 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting, highlighted by a 4-for-6 effort from distance to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Shariah Gailes notched her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Yasmine Djibril scored seven points and posted 10 rebounds. The Griffs shot 38.6 percent from the floor and dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Mount 43-31.

The Griffs had the hot hand early in the contest, taking a 15-5 lead at the first quarter media timeout. Johnson and freshman Irene Rey Pineda hit multiple threes to take the early lead, but the Mountaineer used a 17-3 run of their own to take a 30-29 lead going into the second half.

The Griffs opened up the second half with some hot shooting as juniors Mariam Sanogo and Franka Wittenberg tallied eight combined points to retake a 47-46 lead heading into the final frame. The Griffs had no answers for Raflo in the fourth quarter as the Mount outscored Canisius by a 26-12 margin in the final frame to secure the victory.
