Hockey Defeated by Bentley in Overtime

A.J. Hodges scored 2:15 into overtime to lift Bentley to a 4-3 victory versus Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Ethan Leyh tallied two goals and Artem Buzoverya accounted for the third regulation goal for the Falcons (17-12-2, 15-7-1 AHA), who extended their winning streak to four games with the win. Connor Hasley got the start in goal for Bentley, recording 18 saves to post his 14th victory of the season.

Graduate students Kyle Haskins and Luke Farthing and junior Grant Porter scored for the Golden Griffins (9-20-2, 9-12-2 AHA). Freshman goaltender Petter Wickström Stumer recorded 31 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Hodges was the overtime hero as he collected the puck in the neutral zone and split two Canisius defenders before sliding the puck between the legs of Wickström Stumer to secure the victory for the Falcons.

Earlier in the contest, Haskins opened the scoring less than two minutes into the second period with a power-play goal, beating Hasley with a shot from the top of the right face-off circle.
Farthing doubled the Canisius advantage to 2-0 moments before the midway point of the middle frame when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic and off the right post for his first goal of the season. Bently answered back a few minutes later, scoring twice in a 23-second span late in the second to knot the score at 2-2.

Leyh cut the Falcons deficit in half at the 15:16 mark of the second, depositing Ryan Mansfield's backdoor feed past a sprawling Wickström Stumer to make it a 2-1 contest.

Buzoverya knotted the score at 2-2 on the next shift as he beat Wickström Stumber with a shot over the left shoulder during a zone entry.

Leyh put Bentley in front early in the third as he netted his second of the contest exactly three minutes into the third period, tapping Stephen Castagna's centering feed past Wickström Stumer to give the Falcons a 3-2 edge.

Porter tied the game at 3-3 with less than seven minutes to play in regulation, firing a loose puck past Hasley from the right face-off circle for his seventh goal of the season.
HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"That was a good hockey game. Both teams played hard. Obviously, a tough loss for us in overtime. A nice goal by (Grant) Porter to tie the game up late in the third and Petter (Wickström Stumer) was great again tonight. Good experience for a freshman goaltender. It was an emotional game. At times our emotions got the best of us and at times we handled it well. That's playoff hockey. It's good to get the experience. But this time of year, we're not satisfied just with experiences. We're trying to find the way to be able to celebrate after game and right now we're not getting rewarded.

"One play. It's the difference. You hear championship teams talk about it all the time. We're trying to position ourselves going into the playoffs to be playing our best hockey. We've had some moments of ups and downs, more downs of late. But the reality is, in hockey games this time of year, it honestly comes down to one play. It's one save, it's one battle on the wall, it's one finish around the net. The goal of this sport is to score one more goal in the opponent and we must get that one play to get us over the hump.

"We need more possession and to be more committed to be going north. It's honestly the same thing we talk about in most games. We must be better using the walls. We need to get the puck going north so that we can give ourselves a chance, whether it's on a forecheck or a line rush. We have to be able to get more offensive zone time and that starts with committing to getting pucks north, being better on the face off and winning more draws so we can get possession and executing better on line rushes. We missed some simple plays tonight with passing. We need to be better there, and we need to be harder around the net. Three is not enough. It wasn't tonight. It might be tomorrow, but we're looking for more."
