Swimming and Diving Heads to MAAC Championships Wednesday

The Canisius Swimming and Diving teams take to the pool for the final time this season as they travel to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2025 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet will feature all 11 MAAC men's and women's swimming and diving programs competing for all-conference honors. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The meet is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday at 3 p.m. with women's 3-meter diving, followed by 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays starting at 6 p.m.

CHAMPIONSHIP REWIND
For the second straight season, the Golden Griffins will travel to SPIRE for the MAAC championships,where the Golden Griffins garnered 12 broken program records, six All-MAAC performances and a MAAC Champion. Sophomore Evie Leighton won the 200 Freestyle on day three of competition and Marin De Villard was named men's Rookie of the Meet after he earned three All-MAAC performances, each of which broke a program record. 

The Canisius women's team finished in fourth place in the meet, the program's best finish at the MAAC Championships since 2020, while the men's team finished sixth. The men's squad posted 317 points, while the women earned a score of 332 points. Niagara earned the top spot in the women's side with 697 points, while Marist garnered 664 points for a MAAC Championship for its men's team.

SWIMMERS TO WATCH
Daphne Mead - Freshman - Baltimore, Md.
• Two-time MAAC Swimmer of the Week
• Second on women's team in points for the Griffs this season (666.45)
• Broke two program records at Magnus Cup Invitational and set a pool record in 200 backstroke at dual-meet at SUNY Geneseo.
• In the backstroke and IM this season, Mead placed in the top three in every individual event he has competed in outside of the Magnus Cup and dual-meet versus Niagara. She has won the 100 and 200 backstroke and 200 IM a combined total of 13 times during the 2024-25 season

Sam Vidal - Junior - Montpellier, France
•Leader on the team in total points with 706.35
•Placed first in the 100 breaststroke two times this season, won the 200 breaststroke event two times, and places top-three in those two events five more times.
•Program record holder in the 200 breaststroke, setting the mark at 2023 MAAC Championships with a time of 2:00.65

Evie Leighton - Sophomore - Niagara on the Lake, Ontario
• Led the women's team in points as a sophomore with 673.85
• Reigning MAAC Champion in 200 Freestyle
• Took home first place finishes in four freestyle events this season. 
• Top-three finishes in all freestyle events this season. 8 total top-three finishes.
