Men’s Basketball Cruises to Road Win at Maine

Four Canisius players posted double-figures in the scoring column, led by junior Kahlil Singleton and his game-high 20 points, as the Golden Griffins went on the road and defeated Maine 70-43 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium in Orono, Maine.

The win ended Canisius' three-game losing skid and improved the team to 5-6 on the season, while the Black Bears fell to 1-12 with the loss. The 27-point win for the Griffs is the team's largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent since the Blue and Gold defeated UIC 94-64 on Nov. 26, 2019.

Singleton's 20 points came after he went 7-for-12 from the field, with six of those makes coming from 3-point land. Graduate student Marcus Niblack made his Canisius debut one to remember, as he came off the bench and registered his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a game-high six assists and four steals. Niblack missed Canisius' first 10 games with a knee injury. Junior Bryan Ndjonga added 11 points and eight boards and fellow junior Mike Evbagharu was good for 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals as the Griffs ended the day by shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 45.0 percent from 3-point land.

For Maine, Keelan Steele scored a team-high 12 points and Mehki Grey added nine points. The Black Bears shot just 31.4 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from 3-point land and 50.0 percent from the free-throw line for the game and turned the ball over 16 times, which Canisius converted into 19 points.

Maine came out of the gates red-hot, jumping to an early 7-0 lead just 1:33 into the contest, forcing a Canisius 30-second timeout. From there, the Griffs came to life with a 15-0 run over the game's next 5:04 to take a 15-7 advantage. In that surge, which was started by a 3-point make by Singleton, Ndjonga scored nine of the Griffs' points. Canisius continued to stretch its lead in the opening half and led 39-17 at the intermission, as six different Griffs scored five-or more points in the game's opening 20:00 of play.

In the opening moments of the second half, Canisius scored the first three points of the frame to take a 25-point lead at 42-17. The Griffs shot 44.8 percent from the floor in the second half, with four of the team's 13 made buckets coming from behind the 3-point line.

Four different Canisius players had multiple assists in the victory, as the Blue and Gold ended the day with a season-high 18 assists on 25-made field goals. The Griffs also recorded a season-high nine steals and a season-best five blocked shots in the victory.
