Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Peter's in Conference Opener

Saint Peter's Jayshlynn Vega scored a game-high 23 points to lead the visiting Peacocks to a 61-49 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball action Friday inside the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Nikola Zdenkova added 12 points to the Peacocks' offense, as Saint Peter's improved to 2-8 overall and 1-0 in MAAC action with the victory. After shooting just 25.9 percent from the floor in the game's open 20:00, Saint Peter's made 14-of-31 shots (45.2 percent) from the field in the game's second half, and three of the team's six made 3-pointers came in the final quarter.

Senior Franka Wittenberg led the Canisius with 10 points and nine rebounds, as the Golden Griffins fell to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss. Junior Shariah Gailes and sophomore Yasmine Djibril both had nine points, while sophomore guard Corniya Clay added eight points and four assists. Canisius shot 34.0 percent from the floor and made 5-of-18 tries from behind the arc in the loss, while out-rebounding Saint Peter's by a 38-35 clip.

A bucket by Wittenberg with 7:32 remaining in the fourth quarter tied the contest at 44-44. From there, Saint Peter's took over, closing the game on a 17-5 run over the contest's final 7:09. In that decisive run, Vega accounted for eight of Saint Peter's 15 points, including a stretch of five-straight points which pushed the Peacocks' cushion to six points at 52-46 with 5:15 left in the game.

Canisius came of out the game hot, scoring 14 of the game's first 20 points to take a 14-6 lead just 5:03 into the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Vega scored five points for Saint Peter's in the closing 5:35 of the opening half to trim Canisius' advantage to 27-24 at the break. 


GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Saint Peter's met for the 79th in program history on Friday. Canisius leads the all-time series with a 41-38 record and has claimed five out of the last seven meetings.
• The Canisius defense held Saint Peter's to just 30.0 percent from 3-point land on the night, as the Peacocks hit 6-of-20 attempts from long-range. The Griffs rank 23rd in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense, holding their opponents to just 25.1 percent from distance.
• Wittenberg has scored in double digits in two-consecutive games and five times this season. 

• Freshman Molly Mescall came off the bench and scored a career-high six points after making a pair of 3-pointers.
• Seven of Djibril's nine points came in the third quarter.

Canisius rounds out the opening weekend of conference play against Siena on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off inside the Koessler Athletic Center is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+.
