Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Siena Past Women's Basketball

Siena used a 19-3 run in the fourth quarter to pull away and earn a 73-56 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Siena's Nicole Melious led all scorers with 19 points as the Saints
improved to 4-7 overall and 2-0 in conference action with their fourth consecutive win. The Golden Griffins fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in league action with the loss.

Melious was one of three Siena players to record double-digits in the scoring column in the victory after she went 9-for-18 from field and 1-for-6 from 3-point land. Francesca Schiro added 14 points, while teammate Genevive Wedemeyer chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. As a team, Siena shot just 37.5 percent (30-for-80) from the field and 19.2 percent (5-for-26) from 3-point range, but the Saints were able to turn 24 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points.

Canisius was led by junior Shariah Gailes, who scored a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and an assist. Senior Franka Wittenberg was good for 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Irene Rey Pineda scored nine points while recording three assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril pulled down eight rebounds in the losing cause, as the Griffs were out-rebounded by Siena by a 42-39 clip for the contest.

Djibril scored five points in the first quarter to give the Griffs to a 14-12 advantage after 10:00 of play. In the second quarter, Melious scored 10 points for Siena to help send the visiting Saints into the locker room up 35-29.

Siena led by as many as eight points midway through the third frame, but five-straight points from sophomore Corniya Clay cut the Saints' cushion to 45-42 with 2:58 left in the quarter. A pair of free-throws by Gailes with 25 seconds left in the third put Canisius down 52-48 at the end of the third quarter.

A free-throw make by Clay just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter had the Griffs down 52-49, but from there, Siena took over, scoring 16-straight points to push its advantage to 16 points at 65-49 with 5:05 left in the contest.
