Sacred Heart Scores Win Over Volleyball

Sacred Heart's Abbie Hagedorn and Ryleigh Short combined for 30 kills to help lead the host Pioneers to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in MAAC volleyball action Friday night at the Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Sacred Heart snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory to improve to 9-18 overall and 6-9 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 10-15 overall and 8-7 in league play with their four-straight loss. The Pioneers won the match by set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21.
 
Hagedorn and Short each had 15 kills in the victory for Sacred Heart, which hit .130 for the match as a team, while holding Canisius to an .080 attack percentage for the contest. Hagedorn also recorded 15 digs, an ace and two block assists, while Short was credited with 10 digs, a team-high three service aces, a solo block and a block assist. Brielle Laferriere recorded 33 assists in the victory for Sacred Heart, while Miliani Villarreal posted a team-high 17 digs.
 
For Canisius, redshirt sophomore Julia Lenik had a team-high 13 kills to go with six digs and two block assists. Senior Bella Mosquera added 10 kills and five block assists and sophomore Emma Isroff chipped in nine kills, 10 digs and five block assists. Senior setter Ella Bourque was credited with 38 assists for the Blue and Gold, while junior Brenda Reynaga posted a match-high 21 digs.
 
The Griffs opened the night with a 25-18 victory in the first set after the Blue and Gold hit .176 for the frame with Lenik and freshman Madi Cowan leading the way with three kills each. In the second set, Canisius trailed 21-13 but raced back into the contest by scoring five-straight points to cut the Pioneers' lead to 21-18. After Sacred Heart scored a side-out kill to end the Griffs' scoring run, a kill from Lenik and an attack error by Sacred Heart had Canisius down two at 22-20. From there, the Pioneers scored the final three points of the frame to win 25-20 and even the match at 1-1.
 
Out of the intermission, Hagedorn recorded seven kills in the third set and Short added four more to lead the Pioneers to a 25-16 victory, which gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the match. With the fourth set tied at 14-14, a 5-0 run for Sacred Heart allowed the Pioneers to take control of the frame at 19-14. Canisius battled back, and a kill by Lenik cut the Sacred Heart cushion to 19-18, but from there, the Pioneers scored six of the night's final nine points to secure the set victory and earn the 3-1 match win.
 
MATCH NOTES
• Canisius and Sacred Heart met for the fourth time in series history, a series that dates back to 2015. The Pioneers lead the series, 3-1.
• In the MAAC's unbalanced scheduling policy, this was the only meeting between the two schools this season.
• Lenik has recorded double-digit kills nine times this season, with seven of those occasions coming in MAAC play.
• Mosquera has 270 kills to her credit this season, which is 92 more than she had all of 2024.
• Bourque has 35-or more assists in 12 of the team's 15 MAAC matches this season.
• Junior Kalia Reisma had five block assists in the losing cause for the Blue and Gold on Friday. She is averaging 1.1 block assists per set in the team's last five contests.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will close out the road portion of the 2025 season on Saturday with a match at Fairfield. Game time at Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn., is set for 1 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
