Volleyball Swept by Fairfield

Maya Walker tallied a team-high nine kills on 17 attempts to hit at a .412 efficiency to lead Fairfield to a 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-22) sweep over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn.

Allie Elliott recorded seven kills while hitting at a .316 attack percentage to help pace the Stags (21-5, 15-1 MAAC) to their fifth consecutive win and league-leading 15th conference victory of the season. Abby Jandro and Katelyn Cook both recorded a team-best 11 digs throughout the contest while Harlan Wyche accounted for five of Fairfield's 18 total blocks.

The Golden Griffins (10-16, 8-8 MAAC) were led by redshirt sophomore Julia Lenik, who notched nine kills. Senior Ella Bourque handed out a match-high 30 assists while junior Brenda Reynaga tallied a match-best 15 digs.

Fairfield held Canisius to a (-.121) hitting percentage in the opening frame that saw the Stags record a 25-11 victory. In the second set, Canisius held a 16-11 advantage until Fairfield stormed back with six consecutive points to take the lead and eventually score a 26-24 set two victory.

The third set saw Fairfield leading 17-16 before claiming five of the next six points to build a 22-17 cushion. Facing match point at 24-19, the Blue and Gold managed to string together three straight points to pull within two. A Canisius attack error on the ensuing point, ended any comeback hopes for the Griffs, giving the Stags a 25-23 victory and the match. 

MATCH NOTES
• Bourque moved into third place for career assists in program history with 3,726. She trails second place by three assists which is currently occupied by Cassidy Ceriani.
• Saturday's matchup was the only regular-season matchup between the two programs this season. 
• Lenik led the team in kills for a second straight match and fourth time this season.
• Bourque has 30-or-more assists in 21 of the Griff's 26 matches this season.
• Canisius held Fairfield to a .177 hitting percentage in the loss.

UP NEXT
Canisius closes out the regular season next weekend at home against Merrimack and Quinnipiac. Friday's contest with the Warriors is slated for 6 p.m., while Saturday's season finale against the Bobcats is set for 2 p.m. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.
