Men’s Basketball Falls to Dayton in Season Opener

De'Shayne Montgomery scored 16 points to go with four rebounds, five assists and six steals to help lead the host Dayton Flyers to an 88-48 win over Canisius in front of a sellout crowd at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, Monday night in non-conference men's basketball action.
 
Montgomery was one of three Dayton players to record double-digits in the scoring column as the Flyers opened the season with the victory. Javon Bennett led all players with 20 points, while Amael L'Etang added 17 points and six rebounds. As a team, Dayton shot 52.9 percent from the field, highlighted by a 63.3 percent success rate in the game's opening 20 minutes.
 
For Canisius, junior Kahlil Singleton scored a team-high 10 points in his debut as a Golden Griffin on the power of three makes from 3-point land. He also grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Brendan Oliver added nine points off the bench, while junior Bryan Ndjonga posted eight points and six boards. Graduate student Myles Wilmoth was good for seven points and three blocks, and junior Mike Evbagharu scored six points to go with six rebounds and two assists. For the game, Canisius shot 36 percent from the field and turned the ball over 19 times, which the Flyers turned into 28 points.
 
A pair of 3-point field goals in the game's first 3:04 by Singleton had Canisius down one at 7-6, but from there, Dayton took over thanks to a 13-2 run over the game's next 4:21 that made the score 20-8 in favor of the home team. Montgomery and Bennett combined to score 28 of Dayton's 51 first-half points as the Flyers went into the locker room at the break up 51-27.

   
GAME NOTES
• Monday's game was the earliest in program history.
• Canisius and Dayton met for the 21st time in series history, a series that dates back to the 1952-53 season. The Flyers lead the all-time series, 19-2.
• The Griffs were credited with 31 rebounds in the game, and 11 of those came off the offensive glass. Last season, the Blue and Gold 10-or more offensive rebounds in a game three times.
• Eleven Griffs made their debut with the program on Monday night.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will open the home portion of its 2025-26 schedule on Nov. 6, when the team plays host to Allegheny. Tip-off at the Koessler Athletic Center is slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
