Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Buffalo Fires Past Men’s Basketball

Buffalo guards Ryan Sabol and Daniel Freitag combined to make 11 of their team's 13 3-point field goals to help lead the visiting Bulls to a 71-53 victory over Canisius in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Buffalo improved to 8-0 on the season with the win, while the Golden Griffins saw their two-game win streak come to an end. Canisius is now 4-4 on the year.

Sabol finished the night with a game-high 24 points thanks to his five makes from 3-point land, while Freitag, the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, added 21 points on the power of six 3-point field goals. For the game, Buffalo shot 41.5 percent from the floor, with 13 of the team's 22 field goals coming from beyond the 3-point line. No other UB player scored more than seven points in the victory.

Canisius was led by junior guard Mike Evbagharu, who scored a season-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Fellow junior Bryan Ndjonga added 10 points and five boards, and freshman Brendan Oliver came off the bench to chip in nine points, seven rebounds and a steal. For the game, Canisius shot 37.0 percent (20-for-54) from the field and made just 3-of-20 tries from 3-point land.

Trailing for most of the opening 12 minutes of the ball game, Buffalo used a 13-4 run over the span of 4:49 to take an eight-point lead at 32-24 with 2:44 left before halftime. In that run, Sabol was good for seven of the Bulls' points, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers. Canisius was able to whittle UB's lead down to 32-29 with 1:10 left in the opening stanza, but the Bulls took a 34-29 advantage into the locker room at intermission after Tim Oboh stole a pass at the top of the key and raced down the floor for a slam dunk with just 33 seconds left to play. That bucket was two of Buffalo's 23 points off 12 Canisius turnovers for the night.

A 3-pointer by Evbagharu off an assist from Ndjonga just 1:19 into the second half trimmed UB's cushion to three points at 35-32, but the Bulls answered with a 21-3 run over the game's next 4:33, sealing the victory for the Bulls. That scoring spurt was fueled by Sabol, who scored 16 of UB's points, including the first 11 of the surge.

Graduate student Myles Wilmoth was good for five points and a team-high seven rebounds in the losing effort for Canisius, which out-rebounded Buffalo 34-33 for the game. Fellow graduate student Max Jusianiec added six points off the bench for the Griffs, who dropped their first home game of the season with the loss.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 55th all-time meeting between the two cross-town rivals. Canisius leads the series 33-22.
• Buffalo was making its first appearance at the Koessler Athletic Center since the 2018-19 season. The Bulls have beaten the Griffs at the Koessler Center six of the last seven times the schools have squared off on Main Street, dating back to the 2003-04 campaign.
• Canisius was without the services of junior Anthony Benard, who did not dress because of a concussion. Saturday snapped Benard's consecutive games played streak at 38, which was the longest for any active member of the Canisius roster.
