Dayton Battles Back to Down Women's Basketball

Dayton's Nayo Lear recorded a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and seven steals to lead the Flyers to a 61-52 win over Canisius in non-conference women's basketball action Friday at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Nicole Stephens added 10 points to the Flyers' (3-2) offense. Dayton shot 40.4 percent for the game, which included a second-half that saw the home team sh0ot 48.4 (15-of-31) percent from the floor to earn the victory.

Senior Franka Wittenberg and junior Mary Copple shared the team lead with nine points each for Canisius (0-6). Junior Shariah Gailes grabbed 13 of the Griffs' 41 rebounds in the contest.

Canisius jumped out to a 7-2 advantage to open the contest before the Flyers notched 10 of the final 14 points of the opening frame to hold a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

The second quarter saw the teams trade baskets until a 3-pointer from Copple ignited a 9-2 spurt that lasted until the halftime buzzer and give the Griffs a 30-23 advtnage at the break. 


Dayton reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Griffs by a 21-6 margin in the frame to turn their seven-point deficit into a 44-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Canisius battled back in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit down to as little as two at 53-51 with 2:54 remaining. Dayton was able to keep Canisius from getting any closer, however, notching eight of the final nine points of the game to secure the 61-52 victory.


GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Dayton met for the first time in program history on Friday.
• Canisius out-rebounded Dayton by a 41-31 margin for the contest.
• The Griffs snagged a season-high 14 offensive rebounds during Friday's matchup. 

• The Griffs held the lead in the contest for 11:14, all coming in the first half of play.
• Canisius tallied 30 of its 52 points in the paint.  
• The Canisius bench outscored Dayton's reserves, 26-15.
• The Blue and Gold have registered a three point conversion rate of 30 percent-or-higher in four of their six games this season.
• Gailes' 13 rebounds represented a season high and marked the 13th time in her Canisius career that she has finished a game with double-digit rebounds.

Canisius rounds out its southwest Ohio road swing Sunday with a visit to Big 12 foe Cincinnati. Tip off against the Bearcats inside Fifth Third Arena is slated for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
