Women's Basketball Falls to Cornell

Senior Franka Wittenberg posted a team-high 17 points for Canisius, but it was not enough as Cornell recorded a 62-50 victory in intercollegiate women's basketball action Sunday in the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Wittenberg was 7-of-10 from the floor to pace a Golden Griffins (0-5) attack that shot 47.5% from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. Sophomore Irene Rey Pineda finished with seven points, four assists and three Djibril pitched in eight points on a 4-of-6 performance from the field.

The Big Red (2-2) shot better than 50 percent from the floor (.525) as they saw three players end the afternoon in double figures, highlighted by Rachel Kaus' game-high 18. Paige Engels pitched in 15 points and Clarke Jackson rounded out the trio with 12. Emily Pape controlled the boards for the Big Red, tallying a game-best eight rebounds.

With Cornell holding a 12-10 advantage after the first quarter, the Big Red outscored the Griffs by a 17-9 margin in the second quarter to take a 29-19 lead into the locker rooms.

Canisius fought back by way of a 16-8 run to open the second half, cutting the deficit to just two points with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Cornell was able to create breathing room once again, building up a nine point lead with 1:36 remaining in the game. Canisius was forced to send the Big Red to the free throw line, where they converted all six of their shots from the charity stripe to seal the 12-point victory.
