Canisius Comeback Falls Short at St. Bonaventure

Three Canisius players finished in double figures, but it was not enough as St. Bonaventure posted a 65-61 victory over the Golden Griffins in intercollegiate women's basketball action Friday at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y.

The Bonnies were led by Aaliyah Parker, who recorded a game-best 22 points and 12 rebounds to post the double-double. St. Bonaventure shot 45.8% of their shots from the floor, highlighted by a 24-of-44 effort from inside the arc (.545).

Junior Shariah Gailes recorded a team-high 19 points while senior Franka Wittenberg and sophomore Irene Rey Pineda tallied 11 points each for the Griffs (0-4). Canisius cashed in nine three pointers as it shot 47.1% from behind the arc.

Canisius raced out to an 11-2 lead to open the contest, only to see the Bonnies respond with a 12-2 run to hold a 14-13 edge after 10 minutes of play. St. Bonaventure extended its lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffs by a 15-10 margin to take a 29-23 advantage into halftime.

The Blue and Gold opened the third quarter with five consecutive field goals to ignite a 17-6 run that gave the Griffs a 40-35 lead with 5:29 to play in the frame. St. Bonaventure responded once again to Canisius' salvo, closing the third quarter on a 16-5 spurt to pull ahead, 51-45.

In the fourth quarter, Canisius was able to even up the contest at 58-58 off of a jump shot from Gailes with 2:08 remaining. The Bonnies answered on the ensuing possession with a layup to regain the lead and did not surrender it for the remainder of the contest, using four free throws over the final minute to secure the victory.
