Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot Start Pushes Syracuse Past Women's Basketball

Syracuse's Laila Phelia and Dominique Darius teamed up for a combined 43 points as the Orange topped Canisius, 96-72, in intercollegiate women's basketball action Tuesday at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Phelia led all players with 22 points while Darius finished with 21 to power the Orange attack as they improved to a perfect 3-0 start to the season. Uche Izoje added 17 points to round out the three Syracuse players that scored double digit points in the contest. Darius tallied a team-high four steals off the Golden Griffins' 28 turnovers.

Canisius suffered its third straight loss to open the season. Junior Shariah Gailes turned in 22 points while teammate senior Franka Wittenberg tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double.

Syracuse converted 77.8% (14-of-18) of its field goals to jump in front early on, taking a 32-11 lead into the first quarter break as the Griffs committed 13 turnovers in the opening frame.

Canisius chipped away at the deficit, outscoring the Orange by a 23-21 margin in the second quarter and a 21-19 edge in the third frame of action. The Blue and Gold cut the Syracuse lead to as little as 13 early in the fourth quarter before a 21-8 run over an eight-minute span extinguished any hopes of a Canisius comeback.
