Volleyball Scores a Five-Set Win Over Siena

Trailing 14-10 in the fifth set, the Canisius volleyball team scored eight of the frame's final 10 points to earn a 3-2 victory over visiting Siena in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Canisius won the match by set scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-23, 28-30, 18-16. The victory, the Golden Griffins' sixth straight, improved the team to 10-11 overall and 8-3 in league play, while the Saints fell to 10-15 overall and 5-6 in conference action.

With the scoreboard reading 14-10 in favor of Siena, a service error by the Saints allowed the Griffs to hang on, and it started a 4-0 scoring spurt that let the Blue and Gold to knot the deciding set at 14-14. After a Canisius service error put Siena in the lead 15-14, back-to-back kills from redshirt-sophomore Julia Lenik and freshman Madison Cowan gave the home team a 16-15 advantage. Siena pulled the frame even at 16-16 on a Canisius attack error, but the Griffs responded moments later with back-to-back kills from Cowan and sophomore Emma Isroff to seal the victory.

For Canisius, Cowan, Isroff and Lenik all recorded 19 kills in the win, while senior Bella Mosquera added 12 kills to the winning cause. Senior setter Ella Bourque dished out a career-high 60 assists in the victory, while junior libero Brenda Reynaga was credited with a match-high 31 digs. As a team, Canisius hit .231 for the match and the team's 88.5 total points set a season high for the Griffs.

Siena's Mary Claire Deacy had a team-high 15 kills in the loss for the Saints, who have now dropped two straight and four of their last six MAAC matches. Setters Alara Doganyuz and Alandra Hasbrouck had 22 and 20 assists, respectively.

Canisius hit .481 in the first set as the Griffs cruised to a 25-13 set victory. In the second frame, Canisius led Siena 20-14 late in the set before Siena outscored the Griffs 11-3 down the stretch to even the match at 1-1. Out of the intermission, Canisius regained a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23 win thanks to four kills apiece from Cowan and Isroff.

Siena forced a fifth set by defeating Canisius 30-28 in the fourth frame. In that set, which saw nine lead changes and 19 ties, Cowand and Isroff accounted for 12 of the Griffs' 23 kills, but Siena was able to take advantage of three service aces and three Canisius service errors. In the fifth set, Cowan and Isroff had four kills apiece and Bourque collected five of her career-high 18 digs to help lift the Blue and Gold to the home victory.
