Third-Period Surge Sinks Hockey in Finale at Colgate

Colgate scored three goals in the third period to rally from a one-goal deficit and defeat Canisius, 5-3, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.

Jack Brandt recorded two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist for the Raiders (1-2-1). Max Nagel finished with a goal and an assist while Jake Schneider and Tyson Doucette accounted for the other two Colgate goals. Reid Dyck recorded 17 saves to earn his first collegiate victory.

Junior Walter Zacher tallied two goals and senior Grant Porter was credited with the third for the Golden Griffins (5-2-0). Senior goaltender Chase Clark finished with 36 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Trailing 3-2 at the start of the third period, Colgate tied the game for the third time just 1:27 into the final frame when Schneider stuffed a wraparound around Clark and inside the right post for his first of the campaign.

The Raiders took the lead just before the midway point of the third with a power-play goal as Brandt slid the puck under Clark for his second of the evening to give Colgate a 4-3 edge.

Nagel capped the third-period barrage less than three minutes later with his second goal of the weekend as he tucked home a rebound with a wraparound to give Colgate a two-goal cushion.

Earlier in the contest, Zacher opened the scoring just before the five-minute mark of the first period, jamming home a loose puck from in front of the Colgate crease.

Doucette tied the game less than two minutes into the second period, depositing Daniel Panetta's feed past the blocker of Clark to knot the score at 1-1.

The Griffs regained the lead with a power-play goal that was credited to Porter less than two minutes after Doucette's equalizer when a loose puck ricochetted off the end boards and  off the skate of a Colgate defender and into the goal.
The teams traded goals during the final minute of the second period. Brandt tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal at the 19:18 mark of the frame, jamming home a loose puck from just off the right post, only to see Zacher answer back for the Griffs with less than a second remaining when he beat Dyck to the glove side while on the rush to put Canisius back in front, setting the scene for the Raiders' third-period comeback. HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Colgate was the better team, period. They outworked us basically the entire night. Don't know if it was necessarily a lack of effort or preparation. I'm not going to use any excuses in terms of the length of the trip we've been on or any of those things. Colgate wanted the game more and it's a great opportunity for us to understand that when you're facing a desperate team, they will play a desperate game and you have to match their intensity from start to finish.

"If you look at the goals in the third period, it's us getting beat down low and them getting to the net. Chase Clark gave us a chance to steal the game. We were positioned to do that and maybe caught a bounce or two along the way, but that's hockey. It's a great learning experience for a team that has had a good start to the year, but not our best effort or not our most complete effort tonight.

"Another great offensive performance by Walter Zacher tonight. He's becoming a top college hockey player and looks like he's going to score in bunches. We had some good moments. Zacher scores with less than a second left in the second; you get a crazy bounce on a power-play goal. I'll put it in a category of maybe things are going to go our way in a game where the opponent's had the better of play than us. But this one didn't shake out that way. The harder working team won."
