Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Uses Late Rally to Power Past Colgate

Canisius scored twice in a 2:38 span late in the third period to erase a one-goal deficit on its way to a 4-2 victory over Colgate in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.

Junior Rhys Chiddenton and freshman Carter Anderson found the back of the net during the game-changing sequence to give the Golden Griffins (5-1-0) the lead while senior Oliver Tarr put the game away with an empty-net tally. Junior Walter Zacher finished with a goal and an assist and senior goaltender Chase Clark recorded 20 saves to post his fifth victory of the season.

Isaiah Norlin tallied a goal and an assist to pace the Raiders (0-2-1). Max Nagel registered the other Colgate goal while Andrew Takacs got the start between the pipes and finished with 32 saves.

Trailing 2-1 midway through the third period, Chiddenton brought the Griffs level with his third goal of the season, sneaking the puck past Takacs from below the goal line.
Anderson gave Canisius its first lead of the contest with just under five minutes to play in regulation, slamming home a rebound from the top of the crease after Zacher's initial attempt was stopped by Takacs. Tarr closed out the scoring with 1:05 remaining as he found the empty net after junior Trey Funk created a turnover deep in the Raiders zone. Earlier in the contest, Nagel gave Colgate the lead just 16 seconds into the game as he put home a loose puck during a scramble around the Canisius cage.

Zacher brought the Griffs level just before the midway point of the second period when he collected a loose puck in the slot and beat Takacs to the glove side for his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign.
Norlin put the Raiders back in front with a power-play goal at the 8:33 mark of the third period, depositing Ryan Sullivan's cross-ice feed past a sprawling Clark to give Colgate a 2-1 advantage, setting the stage for the Griffs' late-game comeback.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Proud of the effort all night. Obviously, when you get scored on in the first shift of the game, you're looking for an immediate response from your team. We did that. We found our game quickly after that. Then when you go down on a power play goal midway through the third period, you must respond. The line of (Rhys) Chiddenton, (Grant) Porter and (Walter) Zacher were dominant all night. It just so happens they showed up on the scoresheet in a big way. A huge comeback win against a very good Colgate team on the road.

"It's important this time of year that we're winning different ways. There's a balance to this whole thing. Wins and losses are important, but we're not living or dying by the result of any one game. There were good chunks of that game where we really had the play going our way. The ice was slanted towards their net. Their goaltender was great and made some big saves in some big moments. What makes me proud is we're not ebbing and flowing with things that happen either for us or against us in the game. We're just going over the boards and doing our job. The guys are saying the right things and they're competing the right way. That's the measuring stick. What is our identity? Whether we're up a goal, down a goal, are we going to play to that identity? That has me the most impressed with this group is they don't need a lot of rah-rah motivation. They're motivated by competing and that makes them an absolute pleasure to coach.

"We're finding different ways to win and that's exciting. If you looked at tonight, Chase Clark was very good, but he was not the reason we won because we didn't depend on him to be unbelievable to scratch out a victory. It was more of a gritty effort and checking from us. The game-winning goal is the perfect example. It's taking away time and space from the opponent, staying after it and being competitive. Not worrying about how much time is left. We enjoy playing, so we're not in a rush to get the game over. When we get that goal, it's a big boost, but then we quickly go back to work. That gets followed up by an unbelievable individual effort from Trey Funk to negate the icing when they have their goalie pulled. Funker makes a second and third effort to make a play on the puck, a simple check ends up causing the Colgate player to lose possession of the puck, and it goes right to our captain, and Oliver Tarr gets to finish it off. It's just different ways to win games. You can't just depend on a power play, a goalie or the penalty kill. The guys are really starting to realize that they love to compete together. They are learning that whatever happens in a game, we'll handle it."
