Canisius Announces Two Staff Additions

Canisius Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Maher announced a pair of athletic department staff additions today (Jan. 8) with the hiring of Josh Mace as the University's director of athletic performance and Alec Wheeler joining the staff as assistant director of athletic facilities.

Mace comes to Canisius after spending two years as the head strength and conditioning coach at the College of Wooster. At Wooster, he was responsible for all in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs for the Fighting Scots' 23 varsity sports programs, while also overseeing a student staff that maintained and prepared all weight room equipment for team workouts.

Prior to his time at Wooster, Mace served as the head team performance coach and site manager at Impact Fitness Systems in Hamburg, N.Y. There, he led programming and coaching of speed, agility and strength sessions for various college and high school-aged athletes. In the summer of 2020, Mace served as a strength and condition intern with the Buffalo Bills where he assisted with the administration of the "Catapult" GPS tracking system and also supported pre-training camp testing to help determine what players on the Bills' roster needed during the season to stay healthy. He held an internship with the football team at the University at Buffalo, where he helped develop strength programs for specific position groups and assisted with the operation of the team's fueling station to ensure proper post-workout and post-practice nutrition.

Mace, who holds a certification from the National Strength and Condition Association, earned his undergraduate degree in exercise science from the University at Buffalo in 2019. In May 2022, he earned his master's degree in sport administration at Canisius.

Wheeler joins the Canisius staff after serving as the intramurals and club sports graduate assistant at Gannon University. From 2018-20, he was the lead intern for the Niagara Power baseball team, an organization that plays in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

A 2021 graduate of Niagara University, Wheeler earned his master's degree in public administration at Gannon in May 2024. During his time at Niagara, Wheeler served as the student supervisor of intramurals and he also held the role of head coach for the Niagara University Overwatch E-Sports Team.
