Hockey Doubles Up Robert Morris Tuesday

Graduate forward Kyle Haskins tallied a career-high three points to pace Canisius in a 4-2 win at Robert Morris in Atlantic Hockey America action Tuesday at Clearview Arena in Moon Township, Pa.

Haskins notched a goal and added two assists to help propel the Golden Griffins (9-14-2, 9-6-2 AHA) to victory. Junior Grant Porter, sophomore Trey Funk and freshman Dominic Payne also scored for Canisius while sophomore Matteo Giampa dished out two assists.

Freshman goaltender Petter Wickström Stumer recorded 26 saves in relief of sophomore Ethan Robertson, who stopped all 11 shots he faced, to post his first collegiate victory.

Walter Zacher and Trevor LeDonne notched the two goals for the Colonials (9-14-3, 6-10-2 AHA). Croix Kochendorfer finished with 19 saves between the pipes for RMU.

Porter opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 10:29 mark of the opening period as he beat Kochendorfer with a one-timer from the slot to give the Griffs the early lead.

Haskins doubled the Canisius lead to 2-0 with an even-strength tally at the 14:46 mark of the second when he fired a loose puck under the blocker of Kochendorfer from the middle of the slot for his fifth goal of the season. The teams traded goals during a 46-second sequence during the later stages of the middle frame. Payne extended the Griffs margin to 3-0 with 17:54 elapsed in the middle period when he finished off a zone entry by depositing Giampa's centering feed into the RMU goal. Zacher answered back moments later with a power-play tally, weaving his way into the Canisius zone before beating Wickström Stumer with a wrist shot under his glove.

Funk restored the Griffs three-goal cushion with a power-play goal at the 14:12 mark of the third period, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Kochendorfer to make it a 4-1 contest.
Ledonne closed out the scoring with an even-strength tally in the final minute of regulation to determine the two-goal final margin.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Really proud of the effort tonight. One of the things that we discussed was our discipline and how we wanted to play our game while limiting penalties, especially undisciplined one. The guys did a really good job making it a quiet death for Robert Morris tonight. We had complete control of the third pe-riod. That's a great feeling on our bench. It was very calm, very together. Petter Wickström Stumer gets to go in a game unexpectedly and he was sharp when we needed him. A lot of the saves he made were good, solid saves which he made look very routine. It's nice to have a calming presence in that area as well tonight.

"The power play has been solid all year. If you look at the percentages, we're producing at a pretty good rate. But, while it's great to get to power play goals, what we're asking them for is momentum, building confidence for our team. Obviously, if we can get goals, that's great and we got goals tonight, but we also were able to generate some good momentum going our way with some good power play sets. They were moving the puck around well in zone and we were good on faceoffs. (Assistant coach) Max Mobley runs our power plays and he's been really pushing the guys for execution, and they've answered the bell.

"It's an understanding of what it takes. We took an early penalty in the third. It's not a great start, but the penalty kill was awesome tonight. They were a big reason or the victory. So, if we limit power play opportunities and we also limit scoring chances, what happens to opponents is they get frustrated because they must chase the game. They must try to do something differently. When Robert Morris tried to do that, we were there, every time. We understood how we needed to play, every guy over the boards was doing their job. It was a really good job of how we're trying to end teams, this time of year."
