Hockey Falls in Overtime at Holy Cross

Matt DeBoer scored on the power play with 1:35 remaining in overtime to lift Holy Cross to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.

Michael Abgrall and Devin Phillips scored the two regulation goals for the Crusaders (14-11-2, 12-5-2 AHA). Thomas Gale got the start in goal for Holy Cross, finishing the contest with 36 saves.

Graduate students Cole Kodsi and Alec Cicero accounted for the two goals for the Golden Griffins (9-15-2, 9-7-2 AHA). Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer made 31 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

DeBoer extended the Crusaders' unbeaten streak to seven games with the overtime winner as he beat a sprawling Wickström Stumer from the left face-off circle on a feed from Matthew Kursonis.

Cicero tied the game with 1:18 to play in regulation, redirecting a centering feed from sophomore Matteo Giampa between the legs of Gale during a 6-on-4 opportunity for the Griffs to knot the score at 2-2, setting the stage for DeBoer's extra-session heroics.
Earlier in the contest, Kodsi staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest when he snuck a wrist shot past Gale from the bottom of the left face-off circle for his second goal of the season. Abgrall brought Holy Cross level with 12:25 elapsed in the opening frame when he finished off a 2-on-1 rush to knot the score at 1-1.

Philips gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead moments after the midway point of the second period as he jammed home the loose puck after Jack Stockfish's initial attempt was stopped by Wickström Stumer.

HEAD COACH TREVOR LARGE POSTGAME COMMENTS
"That was a great hockey game. It had a playoff atmosphere, and it was physical. There was a lot of skill on the ice on both sides. I really liked how we played. The result is what it is. We took a penalty in overtime, and it cost us. But we must remember the good things that happened in this game, because there was a lot. We played well for most of the game. So did Holy Cross. That was a battle. A big goal from us to tie it up late with the goalie pulled. Those are always good things. Up and down our lineup was extremely strong and competitive. I couldn't be happier to coach this team. It was a great hockey game.

"It was a hectic game. Every time you play at Holy Cross, it's that kind of game. There's not a lot of room out there. You must put pressure on them. You must be willing to get in on pucks first, know that a check is coming, and understand that you should never be surprised that you're in a battle. Our guys understood that. They battled. Tomorrow, we need to get more pucks in and around the net. Holy Cross is good at blocking shots. They did a lot of that tonight. We need to have a better net presence and find some space offensively. We have a few things we must get better at, but overall, if we continue to play like that, I'll take whatever the game says on the scoreboard, because that was an effort from everybody.

"(Cole Kodsi, Alec Cicero and Kyle Haskins) play the same way together. They're getting some chemistry togehter and that's showing up on the score sheet. Just out of habit I continue to list them third on our line chart, but over the past couple of weeks, they've been our top line. They continue to produce. All three of them play at the same pace. It's going to be in your face. They're going to play hard. They're going to make plays. They're going to check. It's nice when you don't have to explain to guys the effort that is needed on a nightly basis. It's going to show up in goals and assists, because their effort is so high. I don't have to talk to them much about it, because they're just going out and doing it. They believe in each other. They're very predictable, and we're happy they're playing so well.

"Petter (Wickström Stumer) was great again tonight for us. His play was very calm. He made the easy saves look easy. He also made some tricky saves look easy as well."
