Hockey Tripped up by AIC Saturday

Dario Beljo scored two goals to lead AIC to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Alfred Lindberg accounted for the third goal for the Yellow Jackets (8-17-1, 6-12-0 AHA), netting the eventual game-winning tally late in the second period. Justin Mexico notched two assists while Chase Clark recorded 33 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Senior Alton McDermott and junior Trey Funk scored the two goals for the Golden Griffins (8-14-2, 8-6-2 AHA). Sophomore netminder Ethan Robertson made 24 stops in goal for Canisius.

Beljo opened the scoring before the midway point of the first period, placing a wrist shot over the glove of Robertson from the left face-off circle.

Funk knotted the score at 1-1 with a power-play tally at the 17:17 mark of the first, putting home a rebound after Clark turned aside a pair of Canisius shot attempts from in front of the Yellow Jackets goal.
McDermott gave Canisius a 2-1 lead with 8:51 elapsed in the middle frame as he came off the bench and collected a pass from freshman Carter Patterson before putting wrist shot over the glove of Clark for his sixth goal of the season. Beljo tied the game at 2-2 moments after the halfway mark of the second, beating Robertson with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle for his second goal of the contest.

Lindberg restored the Yellow Jackets lead with less than two minutes to play in the second, firing a one-timer under the glove of Robertson from the slot on a feed from Lauri Sertti after AIC created a turnover deep in the Canisius zone.

Canisius pushed for the equalizer in the third period, out-shooting AIC by a 15-5 margin, but Clark and the Yellow Jackets kept the Griffs off the scoreboard to preserve the one-goal victory.
