Hockey Shutout in Series Opener at Penn State

Penn State scored three goals in the second period to break open a scoreless contest and post a 4-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at the Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.

Aidan Fink recorded a hat trick to pace the Nittany Lions (9-10-2) attack. Danny Dzhaniyev finished with a goal and an assist while Arsenii Sergeev stopped all 18 shots he faced to record his third shutout of the season.

Sophomore Ethan Robertson finished with 34 saves between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (7-12-2).

After a scoreless first period, Fink got the PSU on the board less than five minutes into the middle frame, beating Robertson with a wrist shot over the glove from the middle of the slot during a zone entry

Fink doubled the Nittany Lions advantage to 2-0 at the 14:35 mark of the second period with a power-play goal, firing a wrist shot under the blocker of Robertson from the top of the slot.

Dzhanlyev capped the second-period barrage for PSU with 3:10 to play in the middle frame when he fired a shot under the cross bar from the top of the left face-off circle to make it a 3-0 contest.

Fink closed out the scoring with less than two minutes to play in the third period, finding the empty net to complete his hat trick.

Canisius' best opportunity to get on the board came early in the second when graduate student Alec Cicero rang a wrist shot off the crossbar during a 2-on-1 rush.
