Hockey Battles to Final Whistle in Setback at Penn State

Penn State scored three times in the first period and held off a late Canisius rally to post a 3-2 victory in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at the Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.

Keaton Peters, Ben Schoen and Matt DiMarsico all found the back of the net during the opening-period salvo for the Nittany Lions (10-10-2), who completed a sweep of the non-conference series with Saturday's victory. Arsenii Sergeev got the start between the pipes for PSU and finished with 28 saves.

Junior Hunter Andrew and graduate student Alec Cicero accounted for the two goals for the Golden Griffins (7-13-2). Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer made a career-high 43 stops in goal for Canisius.

Peters opened the scoring just 6:03 into the contest, putting a wrist shot under the left arm of Wickström Stumer to give PSU the early lead.

Schoen increased the Nittany Lions advantage to 2-0 with a power-play tally just before the midway point of the frame, putting a loose puck into the Canisius cage during a goalmouth scramble for his fourth goal of the campaign.

DiMarsico capped the first-period barrage at the 13:57 mark, redirecting Wiebusch's centering feed past the blocker of Wickström Stumer while on the rush to increase the PSU cushion to 3-0.

Andrew got the Griffs on the board with the only goal of the second period, burying senior Alton McDermott's feed under the blocker of Sergeev from the middle of the slot to trim the Canisius deficit to 3-1.

Cicero got the Griffs within one with under three minutes to play in the third, stuffing home a loose puck for his third of the season to make it a one-goal game.

Canisius pushed for the equalizer, pulling the goaltender for the extra attacker moments after Cicero's tally, but it was unable to pull even before the final buzzer, allowing the Nittany Lions escape with the one-goal victory.
