Strong Third Period Lifts Hockey to Sweep of RIT

Canisius scored three times in the third period pull away and record a 5-2 victory over RIT in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Senior Alton McDermott started the third-period barrage with the eventual game-winning goal and added a pair of assists for the Golden Griffins (7-11-2, 7-5-2 AHA), who completed a sweep of the season series against their longtime rivals with Saturday's victory.

Juniors Grant Porter, Killian Kiecker-Olson and Oliver Tarr and freshman Carter Patterson also scored for Canisius while graduate defenseman Jackson Decker tallied a pair of assists. Sophomore netminder Ethan Robertson recorded 20 saves in goal to post his sixth victory of the season.

Xavier Lapointe and Matthew Wilde accounted for the two goals for the Tigers (4-17-1, 3-10-1 AHA). Ethan David finished with 20 saves between the pipes for RIT.

Porter opened the scoring just 3:30 into the contest when his shot from the left face-off circle hit a RIT defender and bounced into the Tigers cage for his fifth goal of the campaign.
Kiecker-Olson doubled the Griffs advantage less than five minutes into the second period when he redirected Decker's shot past David to make it a 2-0 contest. Lapointe got RIT on the board at the 15:10 mark of middle frame with a power play tally, firing a loose puck between the legs of Robertson from the middle of the slot to trim the deficit to 2-1.

McDermott restored the Griffs two-goal advantage with a power-play goal moments before the five-minute mark of the third, firing a wrist shot past David's blocker for his fifth goal of the season.
Tarr provided an insurance marker with less than five minutes to play in regulation, racing into the RIT zone before flipping a backhand over the left shoulder of David to increase the Canisius margin to 4-1. An empty-net tally from Patterson at the 17:14 mark of the third pushed the Griffs margin to 5-1 before a power-play goal from Wilde in the final minute of regulation determined the final three-goal margin.
