Payne, Giampa Pace Hockey in Victory Versus RIT

Freshman defenseman Dominic Payne tallied two goals and two assists to power Canisius to a 5-2 victory over RIT in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Payne was one of two Golden Griffins (6-11-2, 6-5-2 AHA) players to finish with three-or-more points as sophomore Matteo Giampa dished out three assists. Graduate student Kyle Haskins, senior Alton McDermott and junior Oliver Tarr accounted for the other three Canisius goals.

Sophomore netminder Ethan Robertson made the start in goal for Canisius and recorded 30 saves to post his fifth win of the season.

Matthew Wilde and Tyler Fukakusa scored the two goals for the Tigers (4-16-1, 3-9-1 AHA). Jakub Krbecek got the start between the pipes for RIT and finished with 35 saves.

Payne opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the contest, putting home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble to give Canisius the early lead.

Wilde answered back for RIT a little more than three minutes later when he beat Robertson to the blocker side from the right face-off circle for his team-leading eighth goal of the campaign.

Fukakusa put the Tigers in front at the 6:57 mark of the opening frame, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush to make it a 2-1 contest.

Tarr tied the game in the opening minute of the second period, putting Giampa's cross-ice feed past the right pad of Krbecek to knot the score at 2-2.
McDermott put the Griffs back in front at the 3:32 mark of the second when his attempted pass to graduate student Mikey Colella was deflected by a RIT defender, but McDermott was able to locate and jam home the loose puck to put Canisius in front 3-2. Payne netted his second goal of the contest with 11:40 elapsed in the third period, as he beat Krbecek from the slot after Giampa weaved his way through a pair of RIT defenders in the Tigers zone to set up the play. Haskins closed out the scoring in the contest with an empty-net tally in the final minute of regulation. POSTGAME COMMENTS GAME NOTES
