Volleyball Drops Two Matches on Friday

The Canisius volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches against Central Michigan and Robert Morris Friday on the first day of action at the Robert Morris/Duquesne Invitational in Moon Township, Pa.
 
The Golden Griffins started the day with a 3-0 (16-25, 17-25, 17-25) loss to the Chippewas. Canisius went on to drop the second leg of the doubleheader with a 3-0 (16-25, 17-25, 21-25) loss to the host Colonials.

With the two losses on Friday, the Griffs dipped to 4-6 on the campaign. 
 
CENTRAL MICHIGAN RECAP
The Griffs jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the opening set before the Chippewas rattled off seven unanswered points to grab the lead and ignite a 21-6 run that lasted through set point and gave CMU a 25-16 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Central Michigan took a 2-0 lead with a 25-17 victory in the second set. The Chippewas used a 7-2 run to close out the set.
 
Canisius led the third set by a score of 9-8 before Central Michigan went on a 10 -3 run to jump out to a 18-12 led. Central Michigan capped off the set as they used a 5-0 run to take the set, 25-17.
 
CMU's Abby Olin notched nine kills with one error on 11 attempts for a .727 hitting percentage to highlight a Chippewa lineup that hit .306 for the match (44-14-98). Natalia Rejment chipped in a match-high 10 kills while Hannah Langton tallied a team-best 12 digs.

Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist led the way for the Griffs with eight kills while senior Kara Zaucha chipped in seven. Senior Jillian Hanna recorded a team-best 11 digs. 
 
ROBERT MORRIS RECAP
Robert Morris went on a 5-0 run to start the match and grew their lead to 9-2 before endeding the set on an 8-2 run to secure the first-set victory, 25-16.
 
The Colonials continued to dominate as they took the second set, 25-17. The Colonials led by as much as eight when they enjoyed a 16-8 advantage midway through the set. Robert Morris closed out the set with two straight points to claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The third set saw the Griffs hold a 16-12 advantage, only to see RMU close out the set and the match with a 12-2 run to grab a 25-20 victory and the match. 

Jaaliyah Evans recorded a match-high 12 kills and Natalie Stepanovich chipped in 11 to pace the host Colonials, who combined to hit .246 (43-13-122) for the match. Jaidan Hockman led all players with 21 digs while Stepanovich pitched in 12 to complete the double double. Ashleigh Wallin dished out 21 assists and Kaitlyn Brown added 13. 

Hedqvist led Canisius for the second straight match with 11 kills while sophomore Kalia Reisma notched nine kills in 11 attempts without an error for an .818 attack clip. Hanna highlighted three Griffs with double-digit digs, recording a team-best 18. Junior Ella Bourque posted 27 assists and 10 digs to record the double double. 
 
UP NEXT
The Griffs return home for their first MAAC match of the 2024 campaign. The Griffs are slated to take on Siena on Saturday, Sept. 28 at noon. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
