Volleyball Drops a Pair in Syracuse

The Canisius volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches against Lafayette and Syracuse on Saturday, the final day of the Salt City Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins started the day with a four-set loss to Lafayette (21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 19-25). Senior Kara Zaucha and sophomore Lauren Hubert led Canisius with 12 kills apiece.

Canisius closed out its trip to Central New York with a 3-0 loss to Syracuse (25-20, 25-12, 25-20). Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist led the Giffs with six kills.

"We had some good and average moments this weekend, but I am confident that we can have way more positives moving forward," Canisius head coach Tom Hanna said. "If we can tighten up a few things on first contact, we are going to be in great shape this year."

LAFAYETTE RECAP
The Lafayette Leopards picked up their third win of the season by taking down Canisius 3-1 in four sets to start the day for the Blue and Gold. Lafayette used a 5-1 scoring run midway through the first set to take an early 1-0 lead in the match thanks to the 25-21 set victory.

Canisius evened the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 victory in the second set. The Blue and Gold held a 23-29 lead before Lafayette scored five of the contest's next six points to knot the score at 24-24. However, Canisius ended up winning the frame thanks to a pair of ball-handling errors by Lafayette.

The Griffs led the third set by a score of 11-8 before the Leopards used a 7-1 run midway through the third frame en route to a 25-22 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match. In the fourth set, Lafayette jumped out to an early 7-0 and never looked back, as they closed out the frame with a 25-19 to win the match 3-1. Canisius battled and got within two points at 8-6, but that was as closes as the Blue and Gold would get the rest of the way.

Zaucha added 12 digs to her 12 kills, while Hubert was credited with two of the Griffs' seven service aces on the day. Junior setter Ella Bourque recorded 42 assists in the losing cause, but those 42 assists helped her move into the top-10 all-time on the school's career assists list.

SYRACUSE RECAP
Syracuse's Ava Palm and Sydney Moore combined for 21 kills and the Orange .376 as a team en route to a 3-0 victory over Canisius. The win moved Syracuse to 3-0 on the season, while Canisius fell to 2-2 with the loss.

The Canisius offense hit just .116 in the three-set loss, as Syracuse ended the contest with nine blocks (18 block assists) in the first meeting between the two programs since 2004.

Hubert had five kills and a team-high nine digs in the three-set loss to the Orange, while Bourque added 18 assists to the Griffs' cause.
