Volleyball Grabs Two Wins on First Day of Salt City Classic

The Canisius volleyball team began its 2024 season with wins against NJIT and Le Moyne on the opening day of competition in the Salt City Classic Friday in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins started the day with a four-set victory over the Highlanders (25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24). Sophomore Lauren Hubert led the team in kills with 17. Junior Ella Bourque notched 51 assists, inching closer to the 2,000 assists milestone.

Canisius continued its dominance in the second match where they swept Le Moyne (25-20, 25-18, 25-13). Senior Kara Zaucha paced the Griffs in kills with 14 while senior Sophia Hedqvist notched a team-high 15 digs.

With the two wins on Friday, Canisius started a season at 2-0 for the first time since the 2020 campaign and the just the third time since the 2011 season.

NJIT RECAP
Canisius jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in opening set on its way to building a 15-7 advantage midway through the frame. NJIT went on a 4-1 run out of the media timeout, trimming the Griffs advantage to five before the Canisius eventually closed out the set on a 4-0 spurt to take the first set, 25-17.

NJIT rallied with a 25-19 victory in the second set, using a 7-1 run midway through the frame to pull way from Canisius and knot the match at 1-1.

With Canisius holding a 15-13 led in the third set, the Griffs registered four of the next six points after the media timeout to build a 19-15 cushion.
The Blue and Gold finished the set with a 6-0 spurt that featured four attack errors by NJIT, to grab a 25-17 set victory and a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set saw Canisius trailing 23-21 before the Griffs fought back, using kills by Kalia Reisma and Hubert to knot the score at 23-23. The Highlanders pulled back in front on the next point, 24-23, but Canisius once again had an answer, as a pair of NJIT attack errors sandwiched around a kill by Zaucha propelled the Griffs to a 26-24 set victory and the match.

Hubert was one of three Griffs to register double-digit kills as Hedqvist and Zaucha finished with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Senior Jillian Hanna recorded a team-best 17 digs, while Zaucha notched 16 and Bourque chipped in 10 to give both players a double-double.

Canisius found itself down 15-14 at the midway point of the opening set against the Dolphins before using an 8-2 run to grab a 22-17 lead on its way to a 25- 20 opening-set victory.

The second set saw Canisius trail during the early stages of the frame before a 6-1 run sparked the Griffs to grab a 16-9 lead.
