Baseball Dominates in Series Sweep of Saint Peter’s

Stellar pitching from redshirt junior Justin Guiliano and sophomore Felix Morin, who took a combined no-hit bid into the seventh inning of game two, allowed Canisius to take a double header sweep of Saint Peter's Saturday in collegiate baseball action at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

The Golden Griffin offense lit up the scoreboard, winning the first game 9-3 and closing out the series with a 16-0 seven inning victory. With the series sweep, the Griffs move to 10-8 in MAAC play with a 17-23 overall record, and are riding a season-best six-game winning streak.

Game 1:
The Griffs were led by another impressive start on the mound from Guiliano. He fanned 10 batters for his second double digit strikeout total of the season while allowing three runs and three hits over 7.0 innings. In his last five outings, Guiliano has allowed over three runs to score just twice.

Freshman Joe Lopinto was also successful in relief for Guiliano and closed the game out without issue.

With Guiliano dealing on the mound, the Griffs offense took control of the game early. In the second inning, the Griffs loaded the bases with a series of singles and scored as junior Howie Stuckey drew a walk. Freshman JC Spinosa tacked on another run that inning with an RBI single.

The Peacocks were able to tie and take the lead in the fourth and fifth innings with homers from Tyler Smith and Joseph Lomangino. This was all the run support Saint Peter's could muster as the Griffs rattled off seven unanswered runs in the final four innings.

Junior Jackson Strong sent out a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-all in the sixth and was followed by an RBI hit by pitch drawn by sophomore Tommy Sheridan to take the 4-3 lead.

The Griffs put the game out of reach in the final frames as redshirt junior Josh Niles and graduate Kenny Dodson each hit 2-run home runs in the seventh and ninth innings respectively. An error in the eighth inning allowed Canisius to tack on another run and put the final at 9-3.

Game 2:
Graduate Chris Pouliot made his return to the mound from injury in the second game, making his first start of the season. He tossed an inning to open the game striking out one and inducing two fly outs.

This set the stage for Morin's magnificent performance. He finished the remaining six innings of the game by striking out four in a no-hit bid that he took into the seventh inning. His one hit allowed came after one out in the seventh.

This was more than enough pitching support for the offense as the Griffs began to click on all levels.

The scoring started in the third with a massive eight-run inning. Five different batters recorded RBI in the inning, punctuated by a three-run double from Dodson that cleared the bases and gave the Griffs an 8-0 lead.

In the fourth, Stuckey drove in his third runner of the game after a single into left field scored Sheridan and senior Carlin Dick

The Griffs put up another big inning in the seventh, scoring six runs off of five hits. Again, five different Griffs recorded an RBI and with Niles driving in two with a single that scored Dick and redshirt freshman Drew Podlas. This ended the game with a score of 16-0 after seven innings of play.

Post game comments from Head Coach Matt Mazurek

"To get Chris Pouliot back out there today was great for him and the team. It really fired the boys up and he was strong. Felix did a great job today commanding the zone and executing his pitches. He was in command from the time he stepped on the hill. The energy that was created by those guys today was contagious!"

"The guys had a plan and committed to it.  When they follow what works and don't try to do too much, good things happen. This weekend, they took what was given and capitalized when they had the chance.  We had a lot of good from different guys all weekend and it helped us find success."

Game Notes:
•After the three game sweep, the Griffs hold a 19 game winning streak over the Peacocks, dating back to April 11, 2015
•Stuckey collected four RBI in game two of the double header, a career high and ties the individual season high for the team
•Canisius drew a season-high 12 walks in game two
•The Griffs outscored Saint Peter's by a margin of 33-6. This is the highest margin of victory for series since last season when Canisius swept Saint Peter's in Buffalo with a 40-8 scoring differential
•Dodson extended his on-base streak to 15 games

Up Next:
The Griffs will finish their road schedule next weekend with a visit to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount Saint Mary's in a three-game MAAC series.
