Baseball Drops Game One to Mount St. Mary’s

Three home runs and a solid 6.2 innings of work from Brendan Yagesh held Canisius to three hits in a 7-1 loss to Mount St. Mary's Saturday in collegiate baseball action from E.T. Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Mountaineers jumped to a 10-9 MAAC record with the win, tying the Golden Griffins (17-24, 10-9 MAAC) for fourth place in the conference standings.

Two of the three Canisius hits came in the top of the ninth inning as the Griffs looked to make a late rally. Senior Carlin Dick and redshirt freshman Drew Podlas hit back-to-back doubles in the ninth inning to break the shut out.

The Mountaineers took control of the game from the onset, scoring two runs in the first inning. After two batters reached on Griff's starter junior Peyton Consigli, Efrain Correa Jr. drove them both in with an RBI single.

The Mount would score again in the second inning as Shane Wockley belted a solo home run, and took a 4-0 lead in the third, scoring on a wild pitch.

Mount St. Mary's would continue to tack on runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Evan Meier hit a 2-run home run and JT Landwehr hit a solo shot to put the Mount up 7-0.

With two outs in the ninth, the late rally started by Dick and Podlas was quickly extinguished and Canisius took the 7-1 loss.

Game Notes:
•The RBI double from Podlas came in a pinch hit spot for sophomore Tommy Sheridan. This was Podlas' first career at-bat, hit and RBI
•Freshman Thomas Russo pitched a career-high three innings and struck out four batters
•Dick notched his sixth double in the past seven games
•This was the first Canisius loss to Mount St. Mary's since March 18, 2006 when the Griffs fell 4-2 in Emmitsburg, Md.
•Graduate right handed pitcher Andrew Fron took his first at-bat of his six year career in the second inning of today's contest
