Baseball Cruises to Victory Over Saint Peter’s

Sophomore Andrew Marcello and freshman JC Spinosa combined four four RBI and three hits as Canisius took down Saint Peter's Friday in collegiate baseball action at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

The Golden Griffins move to 8-8 in conference play with a 15-23 overall record. Saint Peter's drops to 4-11 in MAAC play and 10-34 on the season.

Junior right hander Peyton Consigli was once again stellar for the Griffs on the mound. He earned the win with a 6.0 innings performance with two allowed runs (one earned) and six strikeouts.

His regular Friday counterpart, graduate Tom Peltier, came in to relieve Consigli for the final three innings and held the Peacocks to one run and three hits while striking out four.

The Griffs jumped out to an early lead in the first as junior Jackson Strong walked and stole second. Senior Carlin Dick hit an opposite field double to drive him home and take the 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Griffs loaded the bases with a walk from Freshman Michael Kelly and hits from juniors Trent Rumley and Howie Stuckey. The Peacock managed to get out of the jam with minimal damage but freshman JC Spinosa scored Rumley with a sacrifice fly.

Saint Peter's took a run back in the bottom half of the second as Alex Rakas singled to cut the lead in half.

Leading 2-1 in the fourth, the Griffs capitalized on a Peacock's fielding error allowing Rumley to score.

Marcello broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a scorching single into the left center gap to score both Kelly and sophomore Tommy Sheridan, putting the Griffs up 5-1. The Peacock managed to take a run back in the bottom half of the innings as Canisius gave up an unearned run on a fielding error.

Sheridan kept up his hot streak in the seventh innings reaching on a double and scoring as redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki entered the game as pinch hitter and immediately crushed a double off the wall, putting the Griffs up 6-2.

Saint Peter's scored in the bottom half of the seventh with a sac fly off the bat of Ashby Vining.

Canisius tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning as Spinosa crushed his second homer of his collegiate career to put the Griffs up by five. Sheridan added another double shortly after to drive in graduate Kenny Dodson, leaving the final score at 8-3 in favor of Canisius.
