Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale to Niagara

A six run third inning, punctuated by a Nick Groves two-run home run powered Niagara to victory over Canisius, 15-3, Saturday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the series sweep of the Golden Griffins (18-28, 11-13 MAAC), Niagara clinched their share of the MAAC regular season championship with a 20-4 record in conference. Canisius will move on to the MAAC Baseball Championships, where they will face Mount St. Mary's next Wednesday in Pomona, N.Y. at Clover Field.

Both teams unleashed their bullpens in the series finale as the Griffs called upon eight different pitchers while Niagara used six. The Niagara pitching staff held the Griffs to one hit over the first seven innings.

The Purple Eagles took the lead in the first with an RBI double from Kelly Corl. The Griffs responded as senior Carlin Dick laced a double into the right field corner, allowing sophomore Andrew Marcello to score from second after stealing a base.

Tied 1-1 after the first inning, Niagara unleashed 14 unanswered runs on the Canisius bullpen over the next six innings.

The Griffs were able to respond in the eighth inning as freshman JC Spinosa and junior Jackson Strong were able to reach on a walk and single respectively. After loading the bases with a walk from redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki, junior Trent Rumley singled to drive home two runs.

The Griffs were unable to continue an eighth inning rally to extend the game and lost 15-3 in an 8-inning contest.

Game Notes:
•The Griffs used eight pitchers for the third time this season. They also used eight at Binghamton on March 26 and used eight versus Le Moyne on April 30
•Freshman Joe Lopinto struck out four batters in his seventh inning appearance. A dropped third strike allowed the second batter to reach base
•This is the first time since March 16, 2006 where the Griffs have been swept by their long-time rivals Niagara in a three-game series
•Strong has now reached 42 stolen bases on the season, six shy of the MAAC record of 48
•Rumley continued his hitting streak today, extending it to five games
