Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Eliminated on First Day of MAAC Championship

Canisius was eliminated from postseason contention Wednesday after losing consecutive games to Mount St. Mary's and Marist on the opening day of the 2024 MAAC Baseball Championship at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins suffered a 4-3 setback to the Mount in the tournament opener before falling by an 8-4 margin in an elimination contest against the Red Foxes.

Canisius finished the 2024 season with an 18-30 overall record and earned the fifth seed in the MAAC Championship with an 11-13 conference record. Mount St. Mary's will move on to play No.1 seeded Fairfield at 11 a.m., on Thursday, while Marist will face the lower seeded loser of games four and five Thursday night.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S RECAP
Junior Peyton Consigli was called upon as the opening starter for the Griffs. He pitched two clean innings to start the ball game, striking out three batters and allowing one base runner on a walk. The junior from Fonthill, Ontario struck out a career-high 69 batters this season while only allowing 28 walks.

The Griffs got on the scoreboard first after redshirt-junior Josh Niles crushed a two-out double in the third inning. He advanced to third on a single from senior Carlin Dick and scored on a ground ball that was mishandled by the Mount's shortstop off the bat of junior Trent Rumley

The Mount tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Scott Seeker. Mount St. Mary's established a lead in the next two innings with a solo home run from Shane Wockley and RBI ground out off the bat of Efrain Correa Jr.

Down 3-1, the Griffs stormed back in the top of the seventh. Junior Howie Stuckey led off the inning with his second double of the game, followed by junior Jackson Strong, who reached on an error. Moments later, the Griffs loaded the bases after Dick drew a walk. Rumley tied the game at 3-3 after he ripped an RBI ground-rule double to right, allowing Stuckey and Strong to score.

The ground-rule double proved to be costly, however, as it prevented Dick from scoring the go-ahead run from first on the play. The Mount took advantage of the ruling, escaping further damage in the seventh, before retaking the lead in the home half of the eighth on a wild pitch.

The Griffs were unable to rally in the ninth and lost 4-3, sending the team to an elimination game against Marist.

MARIST RECAP
Canisius struck first as back-to-back doubles from Niles and Dick started the scoring in the first. Freshman Michael Kelly launched a solo home run far over the right field fence in the second inning that gave the Griffs a 2-0 lead.

Redshirt-junior Justin Guiliano got the start on the hill for Canisius in the second game, and held Marist scoreless through the first two innings. The Red Foxes tied the game at 2-2 third inning thanks to an RBI-single by Justin Kapuscinski that pushed two runs across the plate.

From there, Marist starter Jack Wren settled in and held the Griffs scoreless for the next six innings. Overall, Wren went 8.1 innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory on the mound.

Bayrum Hot tacked on a run in the fourth inning with an RBI-single and Kapuscinski homered in the fifth to expand the Marist advantage to 5-2. Marist tacked on three runs in the ninth inning as well to build a six-run cushion.

The Griffs rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning as Strong, Dick and Rumley all singled to load the bases. Strong and Dick were brought home by an RBI-single from Kelly to trim the deficit to 8-4. That was as close as the Griffs would get, however, eliminating them from the postseason.

GAME NOTES
