Baseball Splits Sunday Double Header at Mount St. Mary’s

Canisius staved off a series sweep by scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning to split the double header against Mount St. Mary's Sunday in collegiate baseball action at E.T. Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

After dropping the first game of the day 15-4, the Golden Griffins made a dramatic ninth inning comeback in game two as the team scored five runs on two hits in the ninth to win 7-5. The two teams leave the series with an even MAAC record of 11-10 with the Mountaineers holding the tie breaker after winning the series.

The Griffs also set the single-season program record for stolen bases with 108 in the 2024 season. They surpassed the 2013 team's record of 107 after stealing five bases in the second game of the double header.

Game 1:
The Griffs scored first in this contest as walks and hit batters loaded the bases in the second inning. Junior Jackson Strong and graduate Kenny Dodson both walked to drive in two runs early in the game.

The 2-0 lead quickly evaporated in the third inning as the Mountaineers loaded the bases on Griffs' starting pitcher, redshirt junior Justin Guiliano. They initially scored on a wild pitch, and loaded the bases once more with a walk, setting the stage for Ty Stecko. Stecko launched a grand slam to put the Mountaineers up 5-1.

Canisius bounced back in the sixth inning as freshman JC Spinosa notched a base hit to drive in junior Trent Rumley, who reached on a double. Spinosa went 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI, while Strong was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

The Mountaineers responded in the bottom half of the sixth, putting up three runs, highlighted by a two-run single from David Stripe.

Redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki tallied the last run of the game for Canisius in the top of the seventh, grounding into fielder's choice that allowed Strong to score.

Mount St. Mary's sealed the game in the top of the seventh as the offense exploded for seven runs. They tallied seven runs on six hits including a Tyler Long home run that put the final score at 15-4.

Game 2:
Canisius was again the first to jump out to lead as freshman Tyson Kaufman scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.

Graduate Chris Pouliot started on the mound for the Griffs and pitched two scoreless innings to lead off the game. Sophomore Felix Morin came on to pitch in the third and went four innings while allowing four runs with three strikeouts.

In the fourth inning, the Mountaineers took the lead with a three-run burst. Efrain Correa Jr. and Josh Braxton both recorded RBI singles to take the lead. The Mount added one more in the fifth as Aiden Tierney laced an RBI single to bring the lead to 4-1.

Spinosa was able to cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that scored Kaufman but the run was negated in the eighth inning as Nick Flemming hit a solo home run to put the Mount in the lead 5-2.

The drama began in the ninth inning with the Griffs down by three runs. Sophomore Andrew Marcello and redshirt junior Josh Niles both reached base on a free pass and executed a double steal to put them in scoring position with one out. This set up Spinosa who doubled and drove in both runners to cut the Mountaineer lead to one run.

Strong then hit a double to right field to score Spinosa, tying the game. Strong and Spinosa remained red hot in the double header. Spinosa went 1-for-4 with one run and three RBI while Strong was 3-for-4 with a run, RBI and walk.

Strong advanced to third on a wild pitch and senior Carlin Dick drew a walk and stole second to put two runners in scoring position again. Zwirecki sent a weak ground ball to the shortstop, inducing a play at the plate that was mishandled by the Mount's catcher allowing Strong and Dick to score, putting the Griffs up 7-5.

Redshirt junior Ethan Hennessy recorded the save in the bottom of the ninth preserving the 7-5 score and getting the Griffs the split of the double header.
