Baseball Falls to Niagara

An offensive explosion for the Niagara lineup highlighted by a six RBI performance from Vincent Mauro propelled them to a 17-9 victory over Canisius Thursday in collegiate baseball action at the Demkse Sport Complex in Buffalo N.Y.

The Purple Eagles stretch their record to 33-15 and 18-4 in conference play while the Golden Griffins fall to 18-26 with a 11-11 conference record.

Niagara came out of the gate swinging, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings of play. Overall, the Purple Eagles compiled 13 hits, eight walks and 16 RBI. Both teams committed three errors each.

The 10 run opening volley by Niagara was led by home runs from Mauro, who hit a two-run homer in the first, and Eric Rataczak, who hit a three-run home run in the second inning.

The Griffs were able to respond in the fifth inning as redshirt junior Josh Niles began his career day at the plate. In the fifth, Niles homered to left center field, driving in sophomore Andrew Marcello and junior Trent Rumley.

Niagara erased the three runs scored by the Griffs in the sixth with a three-run inning of their own.

Down 13-3, Canisius made another attempt at a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Jackson Strong led the inning with a walk, and promptly stole second and third base. In his attempt to steal third, the Niagara catcher threw the ball into left field, allowing Strong to score. Later in the inning, Niles roped a double into the left center gap to score Marcello and Rumley once again, cutting the score to 13-6.

Mauro homered again in the 7th inning to put Niagara up 17-6. The Griffs fought back in the ninth as Strong hit an RBI double followed by sophomore Tommy Sheridan's two-run single but were unable to surmount the deficit losing 17-9

Game Notes:
•Niles tied his career high single-game RBI total with five in today's contest. He achieved this feat last season versus Merrimack on February 25, 2023
•Strong reached the 40 stolen base milestone after stealing two today. He is the first MAAC baseball player since 2014 to steal 40 or more bases
•This game marked the 230th meeting between the two programs
•The Griffs have outscored opponents in the ninth inning 34-18 over the course of the season
•The Griffs are 4-13 this season when their opponent hits two or more home runs
