Women’s Basketball Stumped at Akron

Liisa Taponen tallied 16 points and Teniesha Clarke added 14 as Akron cruised to a 82-43 victory over Canisius Saturday in non-conference collegiate women's basketball action at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.

The Zips led the Golden Griffins wire-to-wire and brought their record to an even 5-5 on the season. Canisius, meanwhile, slid to 1-7 in non-conference play.

Taponen and Clarke highlighted an Akron offense that saw four players reach double figures as Ni'rah Clark notched 13 points Shelbee Brown finished with 10 to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds to post the double-double. The Zips shot nearly 50 percent from the floor for the contest (29-of-60), punctuated by an 8-of-19 effort from 3-point range and a 16-of-19 performance at the free-throw line.

Canisius was paced by junior guard Franka Wittenberg, who tallied a season-high 13 while adding three rebounds. Senior Cory Santoro also scored a season-high 10 points, shooting 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. On the glass, junior Mariam Sanogo and sophomore Shariah Gailes each collected a team-high six rebounds.

Akron held control of the contest from the opening tip, limiting the Griffs to just six points in the first quarter while shooting 50 percent from the field on its way to building a 22-6 advantage after 10 minutes.

Canisius had its best offensive effort of the afternoon in the second quarter, shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and scoring 15 points. The outburst was not enough to bridge the gap between them and the red hot Zips, who also had their best offensive quarter in the second stanza, registering 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting to give the home team a 47-21 advantage at the break.

Akron put the game out of reach in the second half, holding the Griffs to single digits in the third quarter and using an 8-2 spurt during the later stages of the fourth to take its largest lead of the game, 82-41, with less than two minutes to play before finishing with a 39-point victory.
