Hockey Rallies to Post Tie Against Sacred Heart

Junior defenseman Robert Kincaid recorded a goal and an assist to guide Canisius in a 3-3 tie against Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Junior Oliver Tarr and sophomore Matteo Giampa also scored for the Golden Griffins (5-9-2, 5-3-2 AHA). Freshman Petter Wickström Stumer made 27 saves in goal for Canisius in his second career start.

Luke Amell, Cole Galata and Jake Hewitt all scored for the Pioneers (9-7-2, 8-5-1 AHA), who picked up the extra point by winning the best-of-three shootout, 3-2. Cullen DeYoung finished with 29 saves in goal for the visitors.

The teams traded tallies during a 53-second span late in the first period to open the scoring. Tarr began the sequence at the 17:35 mark of the opening frame, sliding the puck past DeYoung while on the rush for his fourth of the campaign.

Amell answered back for SHU moments later when his centering feed deflected off a Canisius player and into the cage for his first collegiate marker.

Galata staked the Pioneers to a 2-1 lead less than four minutes into the second period as he beat Wickström Stumer with a shot over the glove from close range after Joughlin created a turnover deep in the Griffs zone.

Hewitt pushed the SHU advantage to two just before the eight-minute mark of the second, wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Wickström Stumer from the top of the left face-off circle after the Pioneers won the offensive zone faceoff.

Kincaid pulled Canisius within one with a shorthanded tally at the 11:29 mark of the second, snapping a wrist shot under the glove of DeYoung while on the rush to make it a 3-2 contest heading into the third.
Giampa brought the Griffs level just before the midway point of the third period when he deposited a rebound off the pads of DeYoung into the Pioneer goal to knot the score at 3-3. The game headed into overtime and after neither team was able to score during the 3-on-3 overtime session, moved to a shootout. Both teams converted on their first two shootout attempts before Felix Trudeau scored in the third round after the Griffs were unsuccessful on their third attempt, giving the Pioneers the extra point in the standings.
