Hockey Stumbles in Saturday Matinee Versus Robert Morris

Cameron Garvey tallied three points to pace Robert Morris in a 5-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Garvey notched the opening goal of the game and added a pair of assists to guide the Colonials (7-7-2, 4-5-1 AHA) attack. Walter Zacher chipped in a goal and an assist while Tanner Klimpke, Greg Japchen and McKay Hayes also found the back of the net for the visitors.

Junior Oliver Tarr and graduate student Kyle Haskins notched the two goals scored by the Golden Griffins (5-10-2, 5-4-2 AHA).

Following a scoreless first, Garvey got the Colonials on the board just before the midway point of the second, beating Canisius netminder Petter Wickström Stumer with a shot between the legs while on a breakaway for his fifth goal of the season.

Klimpke doubled the RMU advantage in the final minute of the second when a shot from Zacher deflected off his skate and into the Canisius goal from close range to make it a 2-0 contest.

Japchen extended the Colonials cushion to 3-0 less than a minute into the final frame, beating Wickström Stumer to the blocker side from the right face-off circle for first goal of the season.

Zacher made it a 4-0 contest at the 4:06 mark of the third, tapping home Mitch Deelstra's centering feed for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Tarr gave the Griffs some life with a little more than five minutes to play in the third with a power-play goal, beating Dylan Meilun over the left shoulder from just above the goal line to make it a 4-1 game.
The teams traded tallies in the final two minutes of the third as Hayes notched an empty-net goal with 80 seconds remaining before Haskins scored on an unassisted effort in the final minute to determine the three-goal margin. Wickström Stumer made 22 saves in goal for Canisius while Meilun finished with 21 stops between the pipes for RMU.
