Hockey Finishes 2024 with Setback to Robert Morris

Mitch Deelstra's power-play goal in the final minute of the second period broke a 1-1 tie and piloted Robert Morris to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Sunday LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Tanner Klimpke notched a goal and an assist for the Colonials (8-7-2, 5-5-1 AHA), who completed a sweep of the weekend series with Sunday's victory. Walter Zacher added an empty-net goal in the final minute while Dylan Meliun recorded 28 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Junior Robert Kincaid accounted for the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (5-11-2, 5-5-2 AHA). Freshman Ben Bonisteel got the start in goal for Canisius and finished 21 saves.

Klimpke opened the scoring just before the five-minute mark of the first period when he jammed home a rebound from just off the right post for his seventh goal of the season.

Kincaid brought the Griffs level at the 7:16 mark of the second period with a power-play goal, firing a slap shot from the right face-off circle that Meliun got a piece of but was unable to keep from crossing the goal line, to tie the score at 1-1.
Deelstra restored the Colonials in the final minute of the second with a power-play goal, redirecting Dominic Elliott's shot from the point between the legs of Canisius netminder Ben Bonisteel to give RMU a 2-1 lead heading into the third.

Canisius pushed for the equalizer in the third but were unable to find it before Zacher put the game out of reach with an empty-net in the final minute of regulation.
