Volleyball Falls in Sweep to Fairfield

Janna Schlageter tallied 11 kills while hitting at a .588 clip to pace league-leading Fairfield in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 26-24) victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn.

Allie Ellicott pieced together a match-high 12 kills for the Stags (16-11, 14-1 MAAC) while teammate Blakely Montgomery recorded a match-high 24 assists. Noelle Carey chipped in with a match-high 17 digs.

 
Senior Kara Zaucha notched a team-high 11 kills for the Golden Griffins (14-12, 10-5 MAAC) while junior Ella Bourque dished out 20 assists. Defensively, sophomore Kalia Reisma notched seven total blocks and senior Jillian Hanna tallied a team-high 13 digs. 

Fairfield claimed the first set with a 25-17 victory. After Canisius raced out to a 5-2 lead to begin the match, Fairfield settled in, using a 11-2 stretch during the frame to secure the opening set. 

In the second set, neither team was able to grab a lead of more than three until graduate student Sofia Hedqvist notched her seventh kill of the match, putting the Griffs in front, 18-14. The Stags pieced together another late run, notching 11 of the final 5 points of the frame to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Stags mounted yet another late comeback to take the third set and complete the sweep. With Canisius holding a 22-16 lead, the Stags exploded for six straight points to tie the set 22-22. The two sides traded points before Fairfield closed the door, taking the set 26-24 and completing the sweep.
 
MATCH NOTES
• Canisius finished at a .214 hitting efficiency which tops the .164-clip that the Griffs hit at in a five-set loss to Fairfield at home earlier this season.
• 11 kills from Zaucha marks the 17th time that she has recorded double digit kills in a match this season.
• Bourque's 20 assists is the 21st time that she has recorded 20-or-more assists in a match this season. Bourque sits 74 assists away from fifth place on the school's career assists chart.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius heads to MAAC newcomer Sacred Heart on Sunday. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
