Volleyball Overpowered at Sacred Heart

Camryn Luginbuhl notched 23 kills and 13 digs to lead Sacred Heart to a 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 26-28, 20-25) victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Sunday at the William H. Pitt Convocation and Athletic Center in Fairfield, Conn.

Cristina Montanez tallied 10 kills while hitting at a match-high .643 clip for the Pioneers (14-14, 10-6 MAAC), who completed the season sweep of Canisius with Sunday's win. Gaby Zovko helped out with 36 assists for the victorious Pioneers.
 

Sophomore Lauren Hubert tallied 20 kills on a .444 attack clip and also tallied 15 digs to record the double-double for the Golden Griffins (14-13, 10-6 MAAC). Graduate student Sofia Hedqvist joined Hubert in double figures with 12 kills while junior Ella Bourque dished out a match-high 41 assists.

Sacred Heart claimed the opening set by a score of 25-19, using a 4-0 run to take a 19-12 lead on its way to the first-set victory.
 
Canisius answered in the second frame, taking the set, 25-14. Trailing 2-1 early, Canisius took control of the frame, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to hold an 11-6 advantage. Leading 20-14 later in the frame, the Griffs earned five straight points to shut the door.
 
Canisius opened up the third set with a 6-2 lead. The Griffs stretched their lead to as many as seven before the Pioneers powered their way back to tie the score at 23-23. Both sides took their turns forcing match point before Sacred Heart was able to rattle off three straight points en route to a 28-26 victory.
 
In the fourth set, Sacred Heart jumped out to a 9-4 lead before using an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 18-9. Canisius answered by taking eight of the next 11 points to trim the deficit to 21-17. Facing match point, the Griffs rattled off three consecutive points before Sacred Heart finished off the match, claiming a 25-20 victory.

MATCH NOTES
Lauren Hubert's double double marked the fourth of the season and the 15th time that the sophomore has tallied 10-or-more kills.
• Bourque's 41 assists is the seventh time that she has recorded 40-or-more assists in a match this season. Bourque sits 33 assists away from fifth place on the school's career assists chart.

The Griffs return to action Nov. 16 in a road match at Marist. Opening serve between the Griffs and Red Foxes is slated for noon at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The match will be streamed on ESPN+
